Suspect in Calif. homeless deaths a former Marine

    • PaulW  •  Fair Oaks, California  •  4 mths ago
Lots of people came back from the war and had friends and comrads killed but they never turned into serial killers! Just because you were in the military doesn't automatically make you special or a saint! I retired from the USAF after 20 years and supervised lots of idiots who had no business even being in the military.
      • Way2Go 4 mths ago
You never know... they probably were never caught being a serial killer.
      • Stating the obvious 4 mths ago
Funny. I've served a few tours and I didn't know I was a serial killer. Gee, how many people did I kill? Seriously Way2Go, you've made it quite clear you've never met anyone in the military or any vets. Thanks for talking out of your rectal cavity.
      • Meok 4 mths ago
Do not generalize your personal experience.

The military consist only of volunteers. No one's been drafted since 1972. Every president has sent troops into combat. Combat affects all soldiers who are exposed to it for extended periods of time. Some can cope with it some can't. The only thing that bothers me is that I cannot recall a war or conflict since World War II that was fought primarily to protect the US. I am tired of our young men being sent to countries that do not appreciate our presence there.
      • TOTALLY SUPPORT GAY MARRI ... 4 mths ago
        cold blooded, Nazi US Soldier...
      • murk 4 mths ago
        And young women.
      • M.N. 4 mths ago
I do agree that it's terrible that our soldiers are dying and we are spending billions for countries that don't respect us or appreciate our efforts on their behalf.
    • Robert  •  Tampa, Florida  •  4 mths ago
I agree with most of you. I also served two tours in Vietnam. I have my demons too but have never even received a traffic ticket much less murdered anyone. Also, stop blaming the V.A. for not caring. I work for the V.A. Almost 60% of the V.A. employees at my facility are vets. We are there because we care. It's certainly not for the money.
      • The Sword 4 mths ago
Only 30% of VA emplopyees have ANY military experience, period! IF you haver more than that, your VA office is unique and one of a kind. I am a Services Officer in the VFW, and I KNOW what I say is true. VA wants all vets to crawl into a corner and DIE!
      • The Sword 4 mths ago
At some risk of being ridiculed, ALL of you need to listen up! PTSD has several markers and all have different percentages of experienced symptoms. In Iraq, and Stan, 31% of our Marines and Army guys are returning with broken bodies and issues (PTSD) and TBI (Traumatic Brian Injury). I am a Services Officer with the VFW and am also a Nam Vet. Some of our Iraqi Vets never left the FOB and are referred to as Fobites. (Forward Operational Base). They feared every night they were going to be rocketed or mortored and they DID and DO suffer from extreme stress. It is NOT the same as fearing it in DC, CHicago, Detroit, L.A. etc. They also
fear other things while in the FOB. Symptoms are not the same either in degree.
PTSD: Anger from 1-10 in a split second; Drinking booze to excess to cover loss of
comrades; hyper-vigilance-wanting to sit with back to wall in eateries and looking at door a lot; labido down in the toilet; memory losses; easily distracted in conversations; having a "glassy look" in eyes according to others; not caring about what is going on day to day unless it means fearing for ones safety. Not "connecting" with your peers or loved ones, as you did previously. TBI has similar issues. To say that a guy did not exchange gun fire with the Taliban or Al Queda is irrelevant. The VA places inordinate amts of attn to those who have a CIB or CAB or Purple Heart or Star setc because it signifies actual physical combat. BUT, of the 31% returning from the wars with those medals or badges, is dismally small. Ask any VET Ctr, where PTSD guys go for therapy in group sessions, and my
claim here will be supported. I am a Nam Vet. I operated on my own, looking forour POWs, and coordinated all dsata with SF guys or SEALs. I had a price on my head
for $1,000.00 if killed onj the spot and $10,000.00 if captured so I became paranoid.
DUH! THAT is why I still am vigilant, hyper, and look over my shoulder a lot. YES, I
have PTSD. I still look around to make sure I am not being targeted, and with some
current reasons. I love my country but do not trust the Govt. Regarding former POWs who were never returned to the USA - 333 of them, one of who was in my unit. I have reason to believe he is still alive, though the govt says otherwise. Yea, right! i AM ASKING that you not judge this Marine unless you have walked in HIS
        boots. Hooahh?
    • Nor-Cal Saxon  •  4 mths ago
Note he didn't see combat, this guy is just a wack-job.
    • JackF  •  4 mths ago
Sad part is possibly the homeless people he killed were vietnam vets, so many vets never received the care & treatment they deserved and needed after returning from that war based upon lies and deception.
      • Casual Observer 4 mths ago
So, you're saying the only homeless people are Vietnam vets?
      • Larry Gibby 4 mths ago
Lies and deception are not related to combat stress. Those are your political take. Unless you were there , you have nothing of value to offer. I was there, Mekong Delta, 1967, I haven't killed any civilians nor have any of my buddies. We do have our problems. Most of you should just shut up.
      • fitter 4 mths ago
Larry you can stuff it. I lost 2 cousins in nam and they said crazies are everywhere. They also said that people are crazy before they join usually.
    • Bob  •  4 mths ago
I haven't gotten over the deaths of dozens of my friends in Nam, and nobody I know ever became a homicidal killer. Are people saying that the soldiers of today have less fortitude than their fathers and grandfathers? Or is it simply easier to blame an unpopular war (was there EVER a popular one?) as the cause of a lack of humanity among certain people? The problems not with the mental state of our soldiers, the problems with the mental state of individuals, and the lack of personal responsibility they're being taught.
    • Gunny  •  4 mths ago
He didn't even serve combat so stop talking about PTSD etc. There's no excuse for him killing people other than being a maggot.
    • Jim  •  4 mths ago
I don't want anyone to take this the wrong way...I have deep respect for any and all veterans and servicemen...especially those who suffer from PTSD. But thousands of Marines are coming home with and without PTSD...and they didn't kill anyone. Justice needs to be served.
    • anno  •  Tujunga, California  •  4 mths ago
The Marines are sure gettin a bad rap these days. All our love and prayers should
got out to all who served/serving. No excuse for murder of anyone.
    • harryd  •  Columbia, South Carolina  •  4 mths ago
Being a Vet is no excuse...A lot of these people had emotional issues before they were in the service....
    • minnestoafan  •  Issaquah, Washington  •  4 mths ago
John Berry, one of the homeless men brtually murdered by this low life was also a VETERAN but we hear nothing about him! Why does the lib media have a love affair with rapists and murderers, while their victims are treated like dirt! John, America misses you, and thanks you for your service to this country, even if our media DOES NOT!!
    • Tom  •  4 mths ago
Spent two tours in VN and was wounded both tours.
Everyone who has faced death has PTDS. That includes robbery victims, rape victims and even people involved in serious auto accidents. If you dwell on it you can lose the ability to function in life. I, like most people, realized the trauma was history.

No, itโ€™s not something I suppressed. Itโ€™s just something I faced and realized it was in my past.

PTSD has become a cash cow for some people and an excuse for others. The solution is not to treat PTSD. The solution is to try and identify those prone to it before they are allowed in the military.

This man never saw combat. Having his friend killed in combat is no different than having him killed in a blotched robbery. PTSD did not cause this man to kill others.
    • Daniel L  •  West Palm Beach, Florida  •  4 mths ago
So this guy never saw combat in Iraq and lost his mind??? GTFO of here... I am tired of these excuses... I agree with the Vietnam vet below as I have been saying it for years... You didn't hear about all this with our WWII vets, Korean Vets, and Vietnam Vets doing all this sh**... Every one has a lame excuse today when they f*** up...
    • dan h  •  4 mths ago
the irony in all this is that the homeless men he killed were most likely veterans themselves.
    • Shelly  •  La Mirada, California  •  4 mths ago
The military needs to monitor these men coming home from battle! Not making an excuse, just tired of reading of ex military personnel going on these killing sprees.
    • Neville H  •  Los Angeles, California  •  4 mths ago
What he did here was totally wrong veteran or not.
    • A person  •  4 mths ago
The core values of the Marines didn't take hold in this one unless I have a deep misunderstanding of courage, honor and commitment.
    • -JR-  •  4 mths ago
Umm once again I did three tours and I'm fine,,,those are just weak people,,period!!!...thank you..
    • Jon  •  Spokane, Washington  •  4 mths ago
These men and women that served in the Military are suppose to see things and experience things NO ONE is suppose to see or do and "just" come home and go on with their lives---that is if they come home in one piece.........Well folks it just doesn't happen that way. This is so sad! One more casualty of War that caused 4 others. All of you quick to send in the troops it takes MORE than just money---ASK a Vet!!!!!
    • GJ  •  Honolulu, Hawaii  •  4 mths ago
I don't see this is as a "combat-related" issue. As a survivor of Tet '68 and the hill battles in and around Khe Sanh, I've spent many years studying and counseling combat vets who, like myself, lost many friends in a myriad of grotesque and brutal manners. Most of us dealt with guilt and loss quietly, rather than with homicidal tendencies. I, personally, left my anger on the battlefield. Because no one gave a #$%$ about us, my energies were towards my returning fellow vets. This is just plain murder. The media needs to stop placing emphasis on wartime mentalities, and just see it as it really is...murder. I resent the parallel. Semper Fi and welcome home.
