    Suspected Contamination of Enfamil Newborn Formula Under Investigation by Indiana Law Firm Starr, Austen & Miller

    Walmart and other retail stores have recalled the baby formula after the death of a 10-day-old reports The Wall Street Journal.

    Scott Starr of the Indiana law firm of Starr, Austen & Miller, LLP, announces an investigation into potentially contaminated Enfamil formula. The contaminated baby formula is suspected in the death of one newborn and the hospitalization of another.

    According to The Wall Street Journal, on Sunday, December 18, 2011, 10-day-old Avery Cornett, of Lebanon, Missouri, died after spending time in the hospital for a rare bacterial infection that may have come from contaminated Enfamil Newborn formula. Tests showed that Avery had contracted the rare bacteria Cronobacter sakazakii, which can come from contaminated powdered infant formula.

    Later, The Wall Street Journal also reported that another child was hospitalized with the same type of bacterial infection, and had been given the same type of newborn formula. The newborn powder formula comes in a 12.5 ounce canister and has the lot number ZP1K7G on the bottom of the can.

    "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families that are suffering from this tragedy," said attorney Scott Starr.  “If the Enfamil formula is contaminated, the quick action by the retail stores will have helped reduce the countless suffering."

    BusinessWeek reports that the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are all conducting tests on samples of the Enfamil Newborn formula given to Avery before he died. This week, U.S. health inspectors visited Enfamil baby formula factory run by Mead Johnson Nutrition Co as part of an investigation into the cause of bacterial infections. Inspectors went to a Mead Johnson factory in Zeeland, Michigan, where the product was manufactured, and a facility in Evansville, Indiana, where some records were kept.

      I did have a couple sample cans of this kind of formula that I gave away. I am in MI. where the formula was manufactured, so that is even more scary. I really hope no other babies get hurt from this and my heart goes out the the families affected. How sad.
