SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — The stepmother of a girl who killed herself says three boys suspected of sexually assaulting the teen and sharing an explicit and humiliating photo of her were removed from their high school football team after the teen committed suicide last fall.

Audrie Pott's stepmother says that after her daughter hanged herself on Sept. 10, the Saratoga High School principal removed the boys from the football team but didn't kick them out of school.

Lisa Pott says the family had asked the principal to expel the boys, saying they had been showing the photo on their cell phones.

Eric Geffon, who represents one of the suspected teens, says the boys were cited last fall but no formal charges were filed against them until Santa Clara County sheriff's deputies arrested them last week.
