SUV crashes into Hampden house with occupants inside, Baltimore fire officials say

Hampden residents Ryan Cormier and Zoe Jack were sitting in their kitchen Saturday when a sound like a bomb blast jolted them.

“You saw a little bit of debris flying and the wall coming at you,” Cormier said. “We ran out the back.”

After they circled around the front of their house, they made a shocking discovery: A silver SUV had crashed into their house and come to rest in their living room.

The crash happened around 11:16 a.m. in the 3600 block of Roland Avenue, said Detective Nicole Monroe, Baltimore police spokeswoman.

Officers arrived to find a Chevy Trailblazer had crashed into a house, Monroe said. The driver, an unidentified man, was trapped.

Baltimore firefighters responded to Cormier and Jack’s home, too, after receiving a call about the crash, said Blair Adams, city fire department spokeswoman.

Adams said medics took the man to the hospital, though his condition was not known.

However, Monroe said it appears the driver was transported as a precautionary measure.

The occupants were not injured, Adams said.

“We are so grateful everyone’s OK; no one was hurt,” Jack said.

The fire department’s special operations team is at the scene evaluating the structural integrity of the two-story home, the primary structure of which was built in 1880, according to state property records.

“There is really an uncertainty of the structure after a car crashes into the house,” Adams said.

Monroe said police are investigating what prompted the man to lose control of the vehicle.

In the meantime, Cormier and Jack are keeping things in perspective.

“The rest of it is just stuff,” Jack said. “We are so fortunate to have our lives.”
