Sweden: Europeans need to question pension habits

STOCKHOLM (AP) โ€” Europeans need to question their habits and have more flexibility if they want to secure the future of their generous pension systems, Sweden and Britain's prime ministers said Thursday at a summit in Stockholm.

Participants of the Northern Future Forum, including leaders from Britain and the Nordic and Baltic countries, focused on how to increase the number of female leaders and entrepreneurs and enable senior citizens to stay in the labor force longer.

The meeting highlighted the growing disparities between different parts of Europe, uniting countries with pro-market views and skeptical attitudes toward calls for more regulation from European Union members like Germany and France.

"We live longer, we are better educated and we are healthier than ever before. This is, of course, a fantastic development, but it is also true that our education, health and pension system have not adapted to this development, let alone our attitudes and social norms," Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said.

Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron agreed, saying, "I don't think anyone is saying you must work until you are 75, I think what we are all saying is that we need to have greater flexibility."

Reinfeldt said the fact that the average global life expectancy has risen from around 46 years in 1950, to nearly 70 today โ€” and 80 in the EU โ€” has changed the premise for pension systems.

He singled out Iceland as a country that has managed to keep people in the work force longer. Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir is still working at 69, and the nation's average retirement age is 67.

Reinfeldt โ€” who made headlines in Sweden earlier this week by suggesting citizens may need to work beyond 70 to retain the current standard of the pension system โ€” clarified he didn't want to force anyone to work longer but would encourage them to do so.

For Cameron, who last month isolated Britain from fellow EU countries by rejecting a new pact on fiscal unity, the Stockholm meeting was a chance to form new alliances within the 27-nation European Union.

"It's great to get together with like-minded countries," he said. "It's different to European Councils โ€” no long communiques, no long speeches by politicians, just actually listening to new ideas, and trying to make sure we make the most of it."

After the meeting, Cameron said he had been inspired by measures in the Nordic countries on boosting women's participation in the labor force. He said he was especially interested in a Swedish initiative to lower taxes on services such as cleaning that aim to spur more families to hire people to help with household chores.

"I think the importance of the flexible parental leave that many of the countries here already have, and we are looking to introduce, is absolutely vital. That point was made by a number of participants," he said.

Reinfeldt acknowledged the meeting brought together some of the better performing economies in Europe.

"Looking at the nine countries that are represented here today, it is true that the economic forecasts are brighter for us than for many other countries in Europe. On average our nine economies will grow about 2 percent ... compared to a negative growth of half a percent for the eurozone," he said.

Still, he noted that the downturn in the rest of Europe will affect the north.

Ah! The good old days of Long Boats, undefended English monasteries, weak Frankish Kings, sly Byzantine, rapacious merchants, and what passed for Russian vodka and Vineland Molson are gone for good. Now it's lawyers in Italian suits made in China who tell the Central Banks to just print a little more money and have governments raise taxes on the skraelings, the thralls and der volk.

Everybody talks about working to an older age, but nobody says where the jobs will come from. If the seniors work longer, they do not vacate spots for the young folks. Duhhh

ya keep working tell you die and let the younger generation be unemployed!!! NOOOO
We need to work less share our work and bring the cost of living down.
Whats the 1% think about that?

In other words, pensions and social programs were built taking into account the longevity and reproduction rates of the society at that time...
People used to have 2-3 kids and live, on average, until 60-70 years.
      BUT.
Now, people only have 1-2 kids and live 80 years.
That means fewer people in the main productive age group...the group that contributes via taxes and production to the social systems/programs.
And health care costs SKY ROCKET once people get past 70...
Add these together, and you have a growing disparity.
THIS is why Europe is in such a mess.
And THIS is what America can look forward to if they continue to build their government and their social programs...socialism at its best...
And socialism has ALWAYS been shown to be a FAILURE.
      ----
People need to depend less on the government and more on themselves.
In other words...less socialism...more (true) capitalism.
      Caveat emptor...

and capitalism is a success for 1% while the rest suffers. Wouldn't call that success

I live in Norway. We work until the age of 67 here. You can talk about all of your socialist stereotypes but that just proves you are clueless about how some European countries work. The other option is for you to get educated and realize that the systems here in Northern Europe, among the most "socialist" by your standards it seems, work very well. Get a clue, then get an opinion -- not vice versa!

I too live in Norway most of the year and what CNR says is true. But I do have to add that Norway does cheat a bit. The vast oil revenues secures our pension(social security) well into the future. In fact with the hugh new discoveries we will be awash with money in the future I hope they will then drop the VAT rate to help with domestic intertainment economy. It really is silly that we have to holiday in Spain or Greece to enjoy affordable food and drink resturants.

This is great if you live in small countries like this. This will not work in larger countries.

Wow, does this mean we cant retire at 100 percent pay at the age of 54 with full medical benefits? Commie lefties will not go for it!

Whats the point of living longer if it just means you have to work longer ?
    • Mister Final  •  3 mths ago
The notion of "working longer" sure doesn't do much to help younger people locate themselves in the work environment of a country, unless selling shoes or popcorn is considered both sufficient and worthwhile for an educated society. No, that "working longer" thing is simply trying to arrest pension outlays at the expense of those younger citizens who are indeed better educated than their forebears.

Of course the USA morons who refer to "commie lefties" are so clueless about the world and their own government that it's embarrassing beyond belief. They must, by choice, live either in a hole or in their parents' basement. Egads!!!

Obama, Trumka, Soros need to listen to these leaders as Europe goes down the rat hole. But of course our communist in the white house want just that...to go down the rat hole, thats their agenda.

Before the New Deal, people took care of catastrophic losses, retirement, insurance, medical costs with their communities. These Friendly Societies (Odd Fellows is a remnant of these) were often related to employers or clubs, and people looked after each other because they knew them, and they kicked out the slackers and took care of the genuinely needy in their societies. Of course I am not referring to the whole nation, but federalizing these problems, and creating entitlements, seems to have an a limit, beyond which a nation starts to fall apart in disharmony over taking care of strangers and being taxed to the limit.

These so-called smart politicians NEVER say one single word about the fact that in less than 20 years, most people (both young and old) will be out of work forever, as robots take over the work place. The PROBLEM is not retirement, duh, the problem is that robots do not pay taxes nor do they contribute to pension plans. Secondly, governments have "borrowed" more and more money from pension coffers, and then lament that there is no money. Let me repeat โ€” you will not have to worry about working until 75, you will have to worry about working at all, ever. Brave New World.
