A Syrian refugee has been praised for serving free food to homeless people in Berlin to ‘give something back to German people’.

The photo of Alex Assali serving food has gone viral after being posted on Facebook by friend, Tabea Bü. It has now been viewed on Imgur over 2.8 million times.

Alex cooks traditional Syrian food for the capital’s homeless every Saturday.

Attached to his stall a sign reads as follows: ‘Our target is to give something back to the people who helped us.

‘We are not consumer people but we are people who love tender.

‘We want to be a positive part in the German community. Want to be one hand (Syrian and German citizens) to help the others and help each other.’

He was forced to flee Damascus with nothing in 2007 after criticising President Assad’s regime - reports MailOnline .

Before settling in Germany, Alex travelled through Lebanon, Cyprus, Egypt, Sudan and Libya.
