T-Mobile Data Stash Lets You Roll Over Data

AT&T did it for minutes, and now T-Mobile is doing it for data. T-Mobile CEO John Legere announced today a Data Stash program that will let customers roll over data at the end of every month, and is giving new subscribers 10GB of data to start. That means if you don't use up all of your megabytes each month, you can use them later.

Existing postpaid T-Mobile subscribers will get access to Data Stash at no extra charge beginning January 2015., and each new Data Stash gets 10GB of 4G LTE data free. You have to be on a 3GB or higher (for smartphones. 1GB for tablets) plan to qualify, though.

If you're on a family sharing plan, each qualifying line gets its own Data Stash with its own allotment of 10GB data. Regardless of the plan, note that the data that you save is good only for a year.

Speaking with David Pogue of Yahoo Tech, Legere said the average wireless subscriber buys 4 to 5GB of data, and only uses 1 to 2GB of that. According to the carrier's CEO, the average cost of each gigabyte is $12. Over a year, that translates to a loss of $480 per subscriber. It's as if you're being punished for not eating fast enough at a restaurant, Legere explained.

Legere also discussed T-Mobile's plans to continue growing its LTE footprint. The network now reaches 260 million Americans, and the carrier just deployed high-speed wideband LTE in New York City.
