    Tableau Public Announces Top 100 Vizes of Q4 2011 and New Sharing Capability

    App-style visualizations on sports and reality TV take top spots

    Tableau Software today announced the top 100 visualizations for Tableau Public in Q4 2011. It also announced an enhancement to its Tableau Public service that lets readers save a customized view of any visualization and share it on social media sites Twitter and Facebook.

    Tableau ranks the top 100 visualizations by viewing sessions and online interactions and shows trends across the group. The top spot went to Grantland.com for a visualization of Reality TV standings. Grantland.com also took third place for its fantasy football app that lets readers manage their leagues. The second-place visualization was on a soccer site, Cartilage Free Captain.

    Tableau Public authors continue to cover a wide range of subjects from sports to economics.


    •     55 different websites and 62 individual authors were represented on the Top 100 list, many appearing for the first time.

    •     Several news organizations are using the service quite heavily, with The Wall Street Journal producing six of the top vizes, Australia’s Herald Sun producing five, and Argentina’s La Nacion responsible for eight of the top 100.

    •     App-style visualizations, such as the two from Grantland.com mentioned above and CBS Sports’ Points Prognosticator and Defense Selector, are becoming quite popular. These visualizations guide readers through decisions by allowing them to filter to their own teams or choices and present data relevant to some action the reader needs to take.

    •     Political vizes are also appearing consistently, from Mashable’s analysis of Republican Presidential candidates to Kate Golden’s analysis of campaign contributions to Governor Scott Walker in WisconsinWatch.

    Beginning today, Tableau Public allows readers to save a customized view of any visualization and share it to Twitter and Facebook. This provides a new way to engage readers and drives more traffic back to the author’s original post. For readers, it provides an easy way to share a point of view or result gained from an interactive visualization.
