Taiwan urges China to respect freedom on centenary

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) โ€” Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou urged China's government on Monday to pursue democracy and respect his island's self-governance as the two sides mark the centennial of a revolution that ended 2,000 years of imperial Chinese rule.

Both Taiwan and China โ€” which split amid civil war in 1949 โ€” commemorate the Oct. 10, 1911, start of an uprising against the Qing dynasty as a seminal event, and both have sought to use the centennial as an opportunity for dialogue.

But Taiwanese authorities have rejected suggestions to jointly host events, fearing that Beijing will use them to highlight its "one-China principle" that places the island under mainland rule.

On the eve of the centenary, Chinese President Hu Jintao made an appeal in Beijing for the two sides to move beyond the history that divides them and work together to achieve a peaceful reunification. Taiwanese are wary of those calls, fearing they may lose their freedoms and democracy if they are reunited.

At a ceremony in front of the presidential office building, Ma said the Beijing government "must not forget the ideals of our founding father and should move boldly toward freedom, democracy and the fair distribution of wealth."

His brief speech was followed by an hourlong arms display in which jet fighters flew in ranks over the spacious square and tanks and missile-carrying trucks rumbled past. Pilots in red jumpsuits parachuted from helicopters in front of Ma.

China's centenary commemorations have had clear political and nationalistic undertones, but Taiwanese public interest in the event has been lukewarm. Most Taiwanese don't want to come under China's control, and don't see the events of 100 years ago as particularly relevant to their future.

The ceremony marks the centennial of an armed uprising led by rebels associated with revolutionary leader Sun Yat-sen on a Qing dynasty garrison. The attack set in motion events that led to the overthrow of imperial rule and raised hopes that China could emerge from more than a century of national humiliation at the hands of foreign powers.

The Republic of China was established after 2 1/2 months. It later fled in disarray to Taiwan in 1949 following the victory of Mao Zedong's Communists over Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists in the Chinese civil war.

China regards Taiwan as part of its territory and threatens to invade should it seek formal independence.

Under Ma's initiative, Taiwan has moved closer to China economically but has refused any political dialogue to settle the island's future.

China's president said Sunday that the two sides should work together to achieve the "great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation."

"Achieving reunification by peaceful means best serves the fundamental interests of all Chinese, including our Taiwan compatriots," Hu said.

Ma did not respond to Hu's call, but instead urged China to "respect history and recognize the existence of the Republic of China."

What a funny photo-- Ma Ying-jeou trying to look fierce and patriotic! Who does he think he's fooling???

He's not even courageous enough to let people call him "President" or let people show ROC flags when his superiors from China come to Taiwan to check up on his progress.

Tsai Ying-wen has more balls than Ma ever did, s patriotic Taiwanese will vote for her.

Ma still has a green card, so he can move back to USA soon.

No matter what you say, the economic development keeps improving everyday. The only unfortunate thing is that political reform is not keeping up.

But eventually China will be a democracy like all developed countries. The only question is when not whether.

Sorry, but China cannot nor will not become a democracy now or ever. It has never enjoyed a history of freedom of thought, expression and of it politics. It has always been a dictatorship one way or another. It has made great strides throughout history, but never as a democratic society. If a democracy were to flourish in China and cause an overthrow of its communist government, they would immediately fall back into some type of oligarchy with centralized control of its society.

"Since the introduction of market-based economic reforms in 1978, China has become the world's fastest-growing major economy,[18] and the world's largest exporter and second-largest importer of goods. As of 2011[update], it is the world's second-largest economy, after the United States, by both nominal GDP and purchasing power parity (PPP).[19] On per capita terms, however, China ranked only 91st by nominal GDP and 94th by GDP (PPP) in 2010, according to the IMF. China is a recognized nuclear weapons state and has the world's largest standing army, with the second-largest defense budget. In 2003, China became the third nation in the world, after the Soviet Union and the United States, to independently launch a successful manned space mission. China has been characterized as a potential superpower by a number of academics,[20] military analysts,[21] and public policy and economics analysts.[22]" frm wikipedia

Imagine the near future controlled by Imperial China! we all will be communist.
      • tallest4eva 7 mths ago
Being 91st in nominal GDP per capita simply means that China still has much room to grow! By the time they grow to be even 40 something on that list, they would have the largest economy in the world and will be the largest consumer market.

Taiwan should just unite with China except, don't let the mainland chinese come into taiwan because mainland chinese smell and sounds like baboons. taiwan is just wasting their money by buying arms from US. how's that going to protect you from china? why don't you save that money and use the money to keep the main land chinese out.

Everybody please take notice. Taiwan will hold its presidential election in next January. The blabs exuded by Taiwanโ€™s President Ma Ying-Jeou are designed to attract votes from the left-leaning independent voters. If he does not say any antagonized rhetoric toward China, these voters will flock to cast their ballots for the candidate from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Speaking of DPP, it is nothing but a power-grabbing rogue party. It has no desire to advance Taiwanโ€™s technology and economy, and to elevate Taiwaneseโ€™s living standard. The main purpose of this party is to forge an environment under which it can declare Taiwan independence. To achieve its ends at all costs, it is willing to be a Japanโ€™s colony, much the same as it was in the period from 1895 to 1945. It is also trying to strike fear at China by hiding behind the US (็‹ๅ‡่™Žๅจ), and is willing to drag the US into a confrontational stance against China, because it is taking advantage of the US-Taiwan mutual defense treaty. While the Nationalist Party, founded by Dr. Sun Yat-Sen who authored a road map, the Three Principles of the People (ไธ‰ๆฐ‘ไธป็พฉ) to rescue China from a near-colonized state, is working strenuously to follow Dr. Sunโ€™s patriotic treatise for the past 100 years, the DPP, which was founded just 30 years ago, is busy with power grabbing. Having no thematic principles like Dr. Sunโ€™s, the DPP is an opportunistic parasite depending on other countries to satisfy its hunger for power.
Having read all the comments, I feel that the commenters of Chinese origin who are hostile toward Chinese Communists are purely because of their unsettled personal scores with the Communists, because they thought their wealth was โ€œrobbedโ€ and โ€œstolenโ€. But please think from the flip side. Most of those who were rich before the Chinese Civil War were stingy misers. The landlords and the bourgeois mistreated, oppressed, and squeezed their subjects and laborers. Although they were very well-to-do, they showed no compassion, no benevolence whatsoever toward their inferiors (็‚บๅฏŒไธไป). That was why the Communists were so welcomed. My advice to the offspring of the past rich Chinese who were affected, please donโ€™t pass down your unsettled personal scores from generation to generation. It is time to move on. In a war, whether it is between nations or among own people, there are always damages and casualties. You can not hold the grudge forever. Let us fight for the common good of all Chinese and of all the people on earth. Long live the mankind!

C'mon... don't waste your time tyring to confuse people. Reading these comments, it is pretty easy to see who does and does not have personal, first-hand knowledge of the social and political characteristics of Taiwan.

It is clear that you do not. Until you have lived there and made friends with a wide range of people in Taiwan, you do not have a valid opinion on the question of when, how or ever IF Taiwan should form a confederation with another country (including China).
      • fair minded 7 mths ago
Sam, you are 100% correct in your evaluation .It's time for the chinese nation and the chinese people to be proud and stand united as one ,and not to be used by the western powers who would like to create the divide and rule and are up to no good for the chinese nation. Social democracy is the good way for the chinese nation as a whole.

OWEbama must confront and tackle 2 โ€œMAINโ€ American issues head-on to gain voter confidence ASAP:
      1) China for FAIR trade practices โ€“ China affairs ALONE can wipe out USAโ€™s national debt.
      2) Terrorist nation of Pakistan for global security issues โ€“ bomb ALL Paki Nuke silos NOW.
      • SuperiorShortness 7 mths ago
        1) Untrue, China holds 9.5% of United States debt.
        2) In response Pakistan will nuke with their mid-range missiles, our troops in Afghanistan, probably kill millions to even a billion people in their major rival country of India. Is 9/11 worth the lives of millions?

Please think it out and look up evidence, don't drive your arguments with merely anger.
      • SuperiorShortness 7 mths ago
Oh, in case you didn't realize. The strategy for nuclear missiles. Is retaliatory strikes. There's no way we would be able to hit all of their nuke silo sites, like every country Pakistan will have designed a MAD scenario.

My grandparents were from China too! My grandfather's family owned a factory and Shanghai where they exported textiles. Mao and his band of thugs came and were jealous of them, ransacked their company and stole all their wealth. Before my greatgrandfather was killed, he called in enough favors to send my grandfather to safety outside of the city. My grandfather eventually grew up and joined the army to fight off Mao's thugs, but because of their great numbers and stolen wealth, they just couldn't fight them off. Eventually he and my grandmother (they met in the army, both trying to avenge the death of their families) had to escape to Taiwan.

I guess all Shanghainese got killed according to you logic ans statement, how evil indeed.
      • LaraC 7 mths ago
...did I say all Shanghainese got killed? They specifically targeted the well to do (and anyone else worth stealing from) and killed them off. I'm sure not all shanghainese owned their own factories...geeze. Learn to read before you criticize.

Well what you said are probably true when it comes to China during that period of time, those was real communists back then.

Taiwan has been saying that China would eventually invade for a while now. Sad, as if great big China can't do without Taiwan. Says a LOT about China. I hope we stay out of that mess.
