Taliban POWs convinced of victory, says leaked US report on Afghanistan

A leaked internal US military report reflects optimism among Taliban detainees in Afghanistan, who expressed confidence they'll retake control of Afghanistan after NATO forces withdraw.

    Kabul, Afghanistan

A classified US military report leaked to the media compiles interviews with Taliban detainees who say their group is primed to regain control of Afghanistan after NATO forces leave in 2014.

NATO officials have emphasized that the report does not represent the military’s analysis, only the views of Taliban prisoners still loyal to the movement. The military’s remarks, however, have not stopped many analysts from casting renewed doubt on the success of the US-led military mission here.

“The document may provide some level of representative sampling of Taliban opinions and ideals, but it is clearly a collection of insurgent detainee commentary, and should not be considered an analysis or any type of interpretation of campaign progress,” says US Army Lt. Col. Jimmie Cummings, spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.

The report had an easy time finding traction among critics of the war, who say it indicates an Afghan mission on the brink of failure at a time of mounting anxiety among many Afghans.

With the 2014 deadline looming and the insurgency still far from defeated, many Afghans worry that it’s only a matter of time before instability even worse than the current situation grips the nation.

There have been a number of recent negative indicators. After years of a property boom in Kabul, real estate prices have been in decline since President  Obama announced the start of the drawdown in June. Last year, the United Nations charted a record number of Afghan asylum seekers, and a number of investors have expressed concerns about putting their money into local projects until the future is clear.

Abdul Ghani, a poultry farmer in Kabul, says business has slowed in recent months. This summer, he stopped midway through building a new chicken coop because he didn’t want to have too much of money tied down in investments here in case the situation deteriorates.

“I don’t want to invest more money into this project because no one knows what will happen tomorrow,” he says. “Across Afghanistan, business is decreasing, so I don’t want to put all my money into the poultry farm. In the event I need cash, I can use this money to survive.”

Still, a number of Afghans say that while the future remains largely unsettled, there is no need for grave concern. In the decade since the Taliban ruled Afghanistan, the country has grown and evolved in ways that will likely make it difficult for a group like the Taliban to regain control.

“Maybe people are a little bit concerned about their future and they’re careful about their investments, but it doesn’t mean that after the withdrawal of the foreign forces [life] will fall apart in Afghanistan and the Taliban will take over,” says Abdul Majid Wardak, a member of parliament from Wardak Province. “There has been a lot of work and we have our parliament and Constitution … and no one will want to lose these achievements overnight."

WAIT .. I am a soldier and don't care if we all pullout BUT there is still at least one American soldier still alive and hidden by the Taliban... they have to at least get him back.

Everyone yells that once we leave things will go back to the way they were before.

Not if politicians would stop fighting the war and let the generals do the fighting.

If anyone says we should not have gone into Afghanistan. I have a question for you. Have you asked the people of that nation on how they felt about the Taliban?

Did you know that the soccer field in Kabul now holds soccer games again and not executions. Did you know that the Taliban fighters run away when NATO forces come in force. As in several companies at once. Also did you know that Natural resources have been found that the locals never knew were there. I could go on and on. But everyone is to focused on the cost and not what has actually occurred for the people in Afghanistan.

Might I also add that America is the only nation in the world to rebuild a nation that we attacked. Ask Germany, Japan, Italy, France, Mexico, and the list goes on.

If those are the requirements to launch wars, then we need to be launching wars all around the world. Those are not requirements, any more than Saddam-was-a-bad-guy, those are just after-thoughts and belated rationalizations. Bush decided on war, THEN fed his sycophants like you excuses and lies, which you have swallowed, hook, line, and sinker. Regurgitating them don't make them valid requirements of war.

This was classified? Anyone with a brain (excluding the brass in the Pentagon) knew this was the Taliban game plan, and with the help of their Pakistani cohorts will succeed. We are talking 14th century (and I am being kind)..warlords, tribal chiefs ruling their areas of influence. The government in Kabul better start packing and head for Switzerland where they stashed the billions the US poured in that country ..Our tax dollars at work.

If the people fear Taliban taking over, why don't they do something to fight off the Taliban? ...

They hate foreign power in their country so much, yet they don't want to do anything to improve their own lives.

and what would the people in this country do if we were taken over by a large armed group with superior fire power and unlimited funds? i guess you could fight back and die.

Fan...you clueless #$%$..this is a very poor country. 95% of the people have one goal every day..put food on the table and keep shelter over their heads. When it is a struggle just to do that...what are you supposed to do against religious fanatics who have millions funneled to them by rich Sunnis in Saudi Arabia...or vs opium growing warlords who supply herion to the US and Europe...or against a foreign occupying army? Throw rocks? Insulated arrogant Americans have no clue how most people struggle just to live....

...oh...and I am also an insulated American...but I try not be as arrogant (and clueless) as you... idiot.

The Afghan people will never let the taliban get control of anything. They are no longer considered part of the Afghan family. The country has grown up and moved on beyond the taliban and their cruelty. They love the progress towards freedom their country has made. God bless the Afghan people.

We have known all along that Afghanistan would revert as soon as the last US plane lifted off. Afghanistan is mired in the 19th century and has no desire to be anywhere else.
    • Larry  •  Cleveland, Ohio  •  3 mths ago
This is not going to be up to the US or NATO. The people of Afghanistan are going to decide whether they want to revert back to old ways and old customs or move ahead and join the modern world. Not everyone wants the modern world. Amish life in the US proves that.

Our first mistake was making this a war. We should've just ripped through the country, killing every terrorist that presented themselves until we got Osama bin hidden then turned around and walked back out.

People say we lost this war, there was never something to win. You can't rehabilitate a shark and you can't polish a turd. We killed a bunch a terrorist and got OBL, we win.

Its simple. OUR leaders historically and continually fail to understand this. Democracy and all it's benefits cannot EVER be given to another country. The people of that country MUST rise up and fight for their own country. If the Afghans truly want THEIR country...THEY and THEY alone must be willing to take on the Taliban. It's that simple. No other country can 'give' them that. They must fight. Just as our ancestors (Americans) had to fight. As we (Americans) would to this day - fight. I have my guns...I will fight any foreign entity for MY country as will my sons.

Instead of pouring kerosene or cooking oil on themselves and self-immolating themselves, the wives of the Taliban should pour it in their husbands crotches and strike a match. It would do much to create a better solution.

Weel gee, if I was fighting for something, I would believe I would win. What else do you expect them to say, especially if they are zealots.

Of course they are going to take over the country once we are gone. We didn't learn one thing from the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Our mission was to eradicate Bin laden and his terrorist organization and we finally had him killed 10 years later but Al Qaeda lives on.

Two years after Muhammad died in the late 7th century, his followers are recorded in history as assembling in an army, traveling 600 miles west, and conquering Jerusalem. That was the "first blood" in our peaceful co-existence (I call it psychobabble).. Look it up, all you miss-informed, America-hating, moral relativists.

The Iraqis and Afgans are being tested by fire. If they pass the test, they will become great nations in an otherwise barbaric region and they can be an inspiration to other Muslim-dominated countries.
Please do not become a theocracy.

Duh. An enemy is beaten only when you have taken away their ability to fight, or they no longer have the will to fight. Neither has occurred in ten years.
