Target announces midnight opening for Black Friday

NEW YORK (AP) — As the run-up to holiday shopping intensifies, Target Corp. said Friday that its stores will open at midnight on Thanksgiving Day for the first time.

That's four hours earlier than last year.

The stores will stay open for 23 hours and close at 11 p.m. Friday, November 25. Target spokeswoman Susan Kahn said the change was a response to customers' demands.

Retailers have expanded their Black Friday hours each year recently.

The season's kickoff overtook Thanksgiving Day last year, when most Sears Holdings Corp. opened most Sears and Kmart stores Thanksgiving morning for the first time. Toys R Us stores opened at 10 p.m. Some stores in Gap Inc.'s Old Navy, Gap and Banana Republic chains also opened Thanksgiving Day last year; the company began operating stores on Thanksgiving in 2009.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., whose supercenters already operate around the clock, opened most of its other stores by midnight Thanksgiving evening last year.

Target, which operates more than 1,700 stores, is based in Minneapolis.

Target needs to be accountable for the way it treats its employees.

Don't worry nothing you want will be in stock, just like their recent 32in, flat screen, check 2 days in a row, in the morning when the doors opened, both days they just happened to sell out. Now how did that happen, when no one left with a TV. Maybe phatom shopper.

this is to the pansy #$%$ petition starter at target,,,,, hey #$%$...1--be glad you even have a job in this economy 2--be happy you even get any time off, when i worked in hotels, it was mandatory to work the day before, stay the night, and work all day on the holiday, then after the holiday, stay and set up for next day functions....so we would miss 2-3 days around every holiday....so.................... man up and grow a set or quit, ya jag off

I don't blame you, and in general all this rush rush rush during the holidays is just causing more stress on an already stressed population have you seen people in the grocery store and their parking lots this week, grumpy stressy irritable and rude . It gets even worse out there as it gets closer to Christmas, if this is what the holidays are turning into why do we even bother anymore.

It'll be fun to watch the mindless sheep stampeding over each other in order to be the first to buy junk that they don't need. LOL

I would agree but I will have to do just that because I work there, trust me I would rather just stay home and sleep.

I hope you won't be one of the people that will be killed in the store riots.
Have fun, be safe, and treat others with polite respect.
And remember to ask yourself if that cheap LCD is worth getting shot, crushed, punched, kicked, or otherwise mauled.
      HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

I would say 7 on Friday morning, and the BIG sales should not be til Saturday this would cut down on a lot of holiday stress.

Family SHOULD be first, but won't. The dollar won out a long time ago. God bless....

So don't buy anything. Go real light these holidays. Let the 400 hundred people at the top, who make more than the bottom 150,000,000, buy everything.

This Black Friday nonsense is absurd in the age of online shopping.

Opening Thanksgiving morning won't save Sears and K-Mart.They're both going bankrupt, so they won't be here to screw their employees on national holidays much longer anymore. It's like the captain of the Titanic holding a huge sale on deck furniture, AFTER they struck the iceberg! What MORONS.

If people want to shop at midnight then go for it. Just remember (and remind any friends who are doing the midnight shopping time) to be nice to the employees. Some may volunteer, but some aren't going to want to be there. Just be nice!

Sheep to the slauter...anything avail at midnight will be available the next 2 months. You save NOTHING going to these special deal days. I would not shop on this day if I was spending your money. Bring your football gear so you do not get crushed by the sheep at the stampeed for made in china crap.

I will never patronize any store that's open on Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving is for the family, not to drive around to visit some big box . 5am on Black Friday is good enough. Customers are stupid to demand this. Impatience to the max, the American way.
    • Trini-Rific  •  Chicago, United States  •  7 mths ago
As much as I enjoy black Friday, retailers need to stop this non-sense and let their employees spend thanksgiving night with their families. 4 AM opening should be the earliest.
    • Arya  •  6 mths ago
That is the new American Way! Dedicate your lives to shopping for junk and trinkets. Slave away so you can stay up and shop! Most animals have more meaningful lives.
