Teen Finds Mom and Brothers Stabbed to Death By Step-Dad in Apparent Murder-Suicide: Cops

A teenage girl made a horrifying discovery when she found family members stabbed to death in an apparent murder-suicide in their Louisiana home, police said.

The 18-year-old girl returned home from a hunting trip around 11 a.m. Sunday to find her mother and her step-father dead on the living room floor, the Jefferson Parish sheriff’s office said.

The girl ran from the home and called 911 immediately.

Responding officers found Kelli Mata, 40, and her husband David Mata, 46, stabbed to death.

Their young sons, four-year-old Caden Mata and two-year-old Liam Mata, were also found stabbed in separate bedrooms.

“He stabbed his wife and two children and then killed himself," a spokesman with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office told INSIDE EDITION.

It was not immediately clear how he killed himself, but a straight-blade knife was found under his body and another knife was found by his side in their rented Marrero home, officials told IE.

A motive for the killing was not immediately clear.

The coroner's office will conduct autopsies on the three victims and the suspect to determine times of death and the official cause and manner of death for each person, police said.

The couple was married in April 2012 and he was originally from Spain, according to his Facebook profile.

The pair was no stranger to trouble and in 2010, before they lived together, Mata pleaded guilty to assaulting his then-girlfriend, whose maiden name was Kelli Fabre, police said.

He was given a suspended sentence of one year in prison and a $540 fine, the Times-Picayune reported.

Mata also pleaded guilty to possessing 1,000 anabolic steroids after a sting at his home in 2002.

Kelli Fabre was reportedly charged in 2011 with writing a worthless check for $700 to Twelde’s Lafitte Drugs.

She pleaded not guilty and paid in full and the charges were dismissed, the Picayune reported.

Mata’s previous marriage ended bitterly, as his then-wife alleged that he deserted her for Fabre, while he claimed that she forced him to move out and had trysts of her own, the paper wrote.
