Teen Thrill Killer Alyssa Bustamante Could Get Paroled Some Day

A teenager who slit her young neighbor's throat and called it "enjoyable" may have the opportunity to walk free one day.

Alyssa Bustamante, 18, was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole in a Missouri courtroom today.

The teen expressed remorse for brutally killing her neighbor, Elizabeth Olten, in October 2009, in what prosecutors described as a thrill killing.

"I know words can never be enough and they can never adequately describe how horribly I feel for all of this," Bustamante said to Olten's mother and siblings, who sat silently. "If I could give my life to get her back I would. I'm sorry."

Bustamante stabbed the 9-year-old girl in the chest, strangled her, sliced her throat and left her in a shallow grave covered with leaves so she could find out what it felt like to kill.

"I just f***ing killed someone. I strangled them and slit their throat and stabbed them now they're dead. I don't know how to feel atm [at the moment]," Bustamante wrote in her diary.

She later added: "It was ahmazing. As soon as you get over the 'ohmygawd I can't do this' feeling, it's pretty enjoyable. I'm kinda nervous and shaky though right now. Kay, I gotta go to church now...lol."

Elizabeth's mother, Patty Preiss called Bustamante "an evil monster" and said that she "hated her" on the first day of the teen's sentencing hearing.

Prosecutor Mark Richardson had argued for life in prison, plus 71 years, accounting for the years Elizabeth lost.

The defense cited Bustamante's depression and a suicide attempt as a reason for a reduced sentence.

On the teen's YouTube page, a video appears to show the suspect with her brothers purposefully shocking themselves on an electrified fence. She listed "killing people" as one of her hobbies under her profile.

Her Twitter messages around the time of the murder spoke of "addiction" and "terrors."

One message said, "all I want in life is a reason for all this pain."

"She committed the murder after deliberation, which means cool deliberation or cool reflection on the matter for any length of time," Cole County prosecutor Mark Richardson told the court Wednesday.

These young people grew up during the last ten years of Watching our government invade and slaughter innocent men, women and children so they are probably starting to think its acceptable behavior. Because we don't seem to mind do we.

I'm no supporter of the war, trust me, but it's no excuse for this girl's heinous crime. I don't even think video games could be blamed for this. It was just plain evil.

Hey John! Psychopaths are too far gone to receive love!

There are many circumstances where a murderer may be rehabilitated, but killing for enjoyment is not one. The lack of empathy for another human being is the sign of a psychopath. This is the kind of person that will kill again given the opportunity to get away with it. I feel sad that this young lady turned out like this, I really do. But I would not risk another life to allow her another chance at freedom. I'm sorry, but it's not worth the risk.

I agree with you 100%. I believe in rehabilitation I understand that this young person was dealt a really bad hand in life. However, I think that the result of that bad hand is that she is a lost cause. I don't have any real faith that she will ever be able to be trusted outside of an institutional setting. I'm sorry for that, but keeping her under lock and key for life is the safest course.

If it were me, I don't think I would want to risk living in the real world. Even if I were pronounced "cured" or "healed" and set free to live my life, I would be terrified that I would not be able to handle the stresses of the outside world and would commit more violent acts.

        Well said, Evan.
I'm sorry if she's had a difficult life. But, her actions prove that she is too dangerous to be allowed out in society where she can harm more innocent people.

Should have been 1st degree murder..sounded like this was planned and something she wanted to do for a long time..I remember being 15 and had my wits about me (didn't murder anybody either), just because you are young does NOT mean you cannot differentiate right vs. wrong!

This is terribly scary. Her diary admits she felt some pleasure at the deed. Where's the death penalty when we need it?

Lots of people come from more abusive environments than this girl and they don't kill. She has no soul and will never have one. These people are manipulative and cunning and cannot be rehabilitated.

How hard is it to understand that a person who is mentally ill isn't rational and the wires are all mixed up? Stop with the "shes not sorry", "if she were older she'd get the chair", "she's probably getting off on fan mail"! The girl is simply sick that would make her do something like that. Whether she's sorry or not doesn't even come into play. She's not right in the head. Her brain is broken. Someone like that could say she's george washington one second and a box of laundry detergent the next. Stop pretending a person with fried wiring is supposed to feel and act as someone who is perfectly sane. Its just like a drunk who is out of their minds when they drink and who does something horrific, but it's even more understandable because she's a M I N O R WHO DIDN'T CHOOSE TO BE PSYCHOTIC!! Having poor mental health is not making excuses, it's just a treatable state. Put her in a psych ward for 10 years until she is better. Vicious blood gluttons all of you who say these things!

I don’t understand how a killer had a “failed” suicide attempt. She was pretty successful at killing that innocent girl. How ironic
    • Optimistic Pessimist  •  3 mths ago
Monsters are just sometimes born, not necessarily because of poor parenting or any other reason. Best thing to do is to put her to sleep like a rabid dog,at least don't ever let her out in society ever again!

People that kill just to kill should be put down, period. There is no need to keep them alive and have to care for them and worry about them. Equal justice, you kill for no justifiable reason then you get killed for a d--n good reason. Monsters are very real people and we have the means and resources to remove them from existence and we should at any and all times. I will believe in giving murders a second chance the second I see a murder victim get a second chance.
