BUENOS AIRES (AP) — Teenager Mauricio Tevez scored the lone goal in his Newell's Old Boys debut to give the Rosario team a 1-0 victory over Boca Juniors on Sunday in the first round of Argentina's new first division season.
Reigning champion River Plate - Boca's bitter Buenos Aires rivals - drew 1-1 against Gimnasia after Colombia's Teofilo Gutierrez headed River ahead in second half stoppage time before an equalizer from Pablo Vegetti.
In Sunday's other game, Independiente overcame Rafaela 3-0, while Racing won 3-1 against Defensa y Justicia on Saturday. In Friday games, Godoy Cruz defeated Banfield 3-0 and Rosario won 3-1 against Quilmes.
Tevez, 18, swerved a shot into the bottom corner of the net with the outside of his right boot from 25 yards (meters) in the third minute of first half injury time.
"It is incredible to debut on Boca's pitch with a goal," said Tevez after the match. "It's a dream."
Boca handed four players their first starts, but Newell's had the better chances over the 90 minutes, with Argentine international Maxi Rodriguez missing good opportunities in the 64th and 78th.
River's Gutierrez was left free inside the penalty area in the 91st to head in from a free kick swung from the left by Leonardo Pisculichi. Gimnasia's Vegetti stretched to steer the ball in from close range 10 minutes later from a corner that was headed into his path.
There was 12 minutes added time in total, due to a floodlight failure causing the game to be temporarily suspended.
Independiente's Federico Mancuello opened the scoring a minute before halftime, with Francisco Pizzini adding the second in the 54th and Juan Lucero netting the third in the 75th.
On Monday, Arsenal plays Estudiantes and Tigre faces Velez Sarsfield, while the game between San Lorenzo and Olimpo was postponed, with San Lorenzo involved in the Copa Libertadores final against Paraguay's Nacional on Wednesday.
