Teens With Autism Preoccupied With TV, Video Games: Study

TUESDAY, Feb. 14 (HealthDay News) -- When given the opportunity to have screen time, children with autism spectrum disorders typically choose television and video games over social interactive media, such as email, a new study finds .

The preoccupation with video games could interfere with the children's socialization and learning, warned the researchers, whose study appears online in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by problems with social interaction, communication and restricted interests and behaviors. Autism spectrum disorders, or ASDs, include Asperger syndrome, which is a milder form of autism.

In conducting the study, the researchers analyzed information on more than 1,000 teens in special education classes, including those with autism spectrum disorders, learning and intellectual disabilities, and speech problems.

About 60 percent of the teens with autism spectrum disorders spent most of their time watching TV or videos, the investigators found.

"This rate appears to be high, given that among typically developing adolescents, only 28 percent have been shown to be 'high users' of television," Paul Shattuck, an assistant professor at the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis, said in a university news release. "Television viewing is clearly a preferred activity for children with ASDs, regardless of symptoms, functional level or family status."

Moreover, 41 percent of the teens with autism spent most of their free time playing video games, the study authors found.

"Given that only 18 percent of youths in the general population are considered to be high users of video games, it seems reasonable to infer based on the current results, that kids with ASDs are at significantly greater risk of high use of this media than are youths without ASDs," Shattuck added.

In contrast, the teens with autism spectrum disorders were less likely to use email or social media.

"We found that 64.4 percent of youth with ASDs did not use email or chat at all," Shattuck said. "Kids with speech and language impairments and learning disabilities were about two times more likely to use email or chat rooms than those with ASDs."

He noted, however, use of social media increased among the teens with autism spectrum disorders as they got older and their cognitive skills improved. Cognitive is a word used to describe brain-based functions such as memory, thinking, learning and processing information.

"This proclivity for screen time might be turned into something we can take advantage of to enhance social skills and learning achievement, especially [with] recent innovations in devices like iPads," Shattuck suggested.

I'm a 25-year-old woman with Asperger syndrome, and I agree with the findings of this study. I've come across MANY World of Warcraft players with ASDs, and many of us rely on this as our social interaction since we are so awkward with it in real life.

My daughter has started playing Minecraft for the same reason. She just can't related to kids her age anymore. It breaks my heart, and I don't want to see her on the computer all the time, but it seems to be the only time she is really happy.

I've worked with kids with autism and I've been successful cause i feel I'm a little asd, ocd or adhd(all terms made by doctors who don't necessarily have the knowledge to understand exactly what these conditions do to the brain). Emma please post a reply cause I really want to meet people with aspergers my own age so we can be friends and help each other. I play guitar and video games to sooth my sense of helplessness and confusion. Any people who "understand me" please reply.

        Tragic disorder.

Why should this surprise anyone? Those with ASD just want an escape from their peers who rarely understand them and during early adolescence at least, their peers rarely try to understand them. They need the emotional release, so let them have it.

It's too much hassle trying to figure out the normals. I'd rather just be left alone.

I bought a "multi-media" computer in the early 90's BECAUSE my son had autism. It was a godsend. It had educational preschool programs & I used it for all sorts of things. He had already learned to type on an old electric I borrowed. He learned how to follow directions & also how to have more patience if he made a mistake (after several bouts of pounding t/keyboard)! How many of us would like to throw the whole thing out the window---right? He was soon more proficient than I was. I could also use it as a reward for good behavior. He seemed to crave knowledge & something to do with his brain. He has a very good memory for detail & factual information. He stopped a lot of the self-stim stuff; like fluttering his fingers in front of his eyes, humming & rocking, lining objects up along the edge of the tv to look at them out the corner of his eye, & the dreaded tantrum at about the same time everyday. He was able to start school, albeit special-ed, with some ability to participate & do as he was asked, WITHOUT ANY DRUGS, I might add. He had ONE potty mishap the first week or so. Then he was ok after getting used to the new environment.
So, don't knock it till you've tried it! I could say more about the video games. Only that I kept him away from t/violent stuff as I think all parents should.

You have it worse with your child than with one of ours. You are to be commended!

@Overthill, I bet that "multimedia computer" in the early 90's was a Packard Bell, am I correct?

i dont think the author was bashing parents who allow their kids to play video games. Besides ASd is more common in boys and frankly boys who "chat" are abnormal if you ask me.
ALL the adolescent boys ive known (including those without AsD) watch tons of tv and play tons of video games. i dont know where this author is getting 28%?!

Maybe they prefer video games & Tv to the little "normal" monsters who bully them because they are different. Until we get to the point in society where we teach our kids not to judge others we are always gonna have issues like this. These kids feel awkward enough without your little monster running around calling them wierd & retard & all the other derogatory names reserved for kids with mental & developmental issues.
      • Martha 3 mths ago
Yeah, I think the exact same way. "Normal" people suck.
    • Kirstin  •  3 mths ago
"The preoccupation with video games could interfere with the children's socialization and learning, warned the researchers" Did the researchers even contemplate whether they've got the causal relationship entirely backwards? A teen who was diagnosed years ago with autism already has major problems with socialization and learning; they may prefer video games because they can *understand* those.

And though it's tempting to blame modern technology, a century ago they'd be bookworms, tinkerers, or troublemakers. They don't have problems with socialization due to video games; they play video games in part due to problems with socialization.
      • Jennifer 3 mths ago
I totally agree. It's like people who say "When I was a kid, there was no such thing as ADHD!" Well yes, there was. But it was called "being a troublemaker", and kids were branded that way by teachers.
      • Becky 3 mths ago
        Well said!
      • Tony 3 mths ago
One of the reasons autistic children would have problems with socialization is that some of the children in their age group are bullies.

As a parent of a child with autism I could have provided this information in 2 minutes. I hope we didn't waste too much funding on this study. Kids with autism prefer video games, the video games are enjoyable for them. No pressure to have to mold or adapt to the "normal" world around them. Great for video games.

No tv in my house and 1 hour of games a day on the weekend. Parents need to be parents!

I'm a 19 year old teenager with Asperger's syndrome, but I only partially agree. I do spend a rather large amount of my time watching TV and playing video games, but I also email and chat frequently online. I prefer talking to people through text messages, emails, or chat, because I am more able to get across what I want to say to people when not talking directly to their face. I read a lot as well as playing TV and video games, so you can't really say that I'm not learning. As Emma has already said, online games and other stuff like that is a lot easier because it's a form of social interaction we don't have to deal with in real life :)

You know, you can give some people books............ OMG!! When are these so called educated idiot Dr's going to learn to shut their mouths and open their ears!! As usual they have this all bassakward! Most of these children try at an early age, kidergarten age, to interact with their peers. Their peers find them awkward and not on the same level with them and shun them or make fun of them, driving these kids back in the house to find quiet alone activities to get involved in. Until we learn how to teach our children from early on how to accept people with disabilities this 'I'm better than you are so I'm going to belittle and bully you' attitude will continue. And idiot Drs will continue trying to find the wrong solution.

No duh. I'm an Adult Services Specialist working with developmentally disabled adults, and it's usually video games, computer usage, and watching movies that dominates their time by a large amount.

Look at it this way: playing games where they make their own decisions the way they want and still win outshines being told that they're doing things wrong in the "real world" every time. Would you rather be a wizard-ninja ruling a world or a person seen as having a disability?
    • ddn  •  3 mths ago
Hahaha I think most children would rather watch TV or play video games too..
    • Justin D  •  Seattle, Washington  •  3 mths ago
They are making the playing field even. Social media has been shown to decrease certain types of analytical thinking. Maybe they figure if they abstain then eventually they will rule the world. In their world people are no longer hurt by others and things are put in order and work in a manner that has OCDish precision. Ahhhhhh!

My son is on the autism spectrum. Yes, he watches a lot of tv and movies on DVD. A). This is an enjoyable activity for him and lets him unwind and release his frustration as he rocks in his rocker while he watches; B) he has no friends due to his poor social skills, so who would he email? C). he can read but cannot type/use a keyboard due to the physical and developmental delays caused by the autism, so how would he email anybody? I agree with those who have posted that once again we have a study where researchers spent money to state the obvious.

As someone with Aspergers, it's not the video games or tv. Without tv or video games I would have done something else by myself, such as reading books. I never liked other kids, too chaotic, too unpredictable. I wouldn't have wanted to email people, let alone talk to them, I had nothing in common. It wasn't until late high school and college when I found a few people I could relate to.

Did you REALLY explain what "cognitive" means!? Who do you think is reading this article, kindergartners?
    • That Guy  •  3 mths ago
So...playing video games is somehow horrible and hurting people, but wasting your life away in front of an iPad isn't? Let's be honest, they probably are just playing Angry Birds and other worthless apps on there. How about letting people do things they enjoy and let them learn at their own pace? Social Media or Video games could be a way for someone who is more reserved and introverted to become more comfortable communicating with others since it isn't face to face. This could help them become more confident in themselves and their communication skills, which in turn could lead to improvements in face to face communication.

I am 50 years old. It is frustrating when people say when I was young we did not have all this ADD and autism. Yes we did, I was there. They were the kids picked on for being weird or bullies or just different. It is far from perfect now but the teenagers of this generation are a bit kinder/tolerant than mine. No I was not picked on but I could just kick myself for not standing up to those who did pick on the different kids.
    • Josh  •  3 mths ago
60% my #$%$ they dont even understand whats considered autism as it is. Autistic kids tend to have more of an addictive personality but that doesnt mean they are all addicted to games, they can be addicted to other things like my brother who's in Jazz band, Symphonic Band, and Marching band, he can play two instruments and probably could learn more if he wanted to. Every kid is addicted to games also on a side note, thats why you have to find other things to get them into like sports. And the whole email thing is dumb also, my bro has a facebook. This is just pure generalizations.

Another BS Autism study. Totally stupid waste of time and money. I could replace the word Autism with Brown Eyed Children, and have the same result. I was born with Autism 53 years ago, and I am so sick of these studies. TOTAL BS!
