Tel Aviv angers religious by seeking Sabbath buses

JERUSALEM (AP) — In the latest salvo in Israel's simmering cultural war between religious and secular Jews, municipal authorities in the bustling metropolis of Tel Aviv have outraged the country's religious establishment with a decision to launch bus service on the Jewish Sabbath.

The effort — likely to be blocked by the government — comes as the country's powerful religious minority faces increasing pressure over what many perceive to be attempts to impose religious tenets on the rest of the country.

Recent months have seen a growing uproar over issues such as the segregation of men and women on buses and sidewalks by ultra-Orthodox Jews and the group's non-participation in the workforce, relying instead on government subsidies.

Also Tuesday, Israel's Supreme Court ruled against extending the controversial "Tal Law" that lays out a plan by which ultra-Orthodox Jews, who devote their lives to full time Torah study, would perform deferred and limited military service.

The ultra-Orthodox have historically been able to find exemptions from military service, a practice which is resented by many secular Israelis. The law was seen as a compromise attempt to bring them into the army, but had little effect and was seen as a failure.

Religious life in Israel is dominated by a strict Orthodox establishment, which wields significant power over issues such as marriage and burial. It typically resists alterations to the so called "status quo" on religious issues, agreed upon when Israel was established in 1948.

As part of this arrangement, there is no public transportation in most Israeli cities — mixed Jewish-Arab Haifa being a notable exception — from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday and on Jewish holidays. But the city council of largely secular Tel Aviv voted late Monday to draft a request to Israel's Transportation Ministry to allow lines to operate on the Sabbath.

"Israel is the only country in the world in which there is no public transportation in one out of four days, on Saturdays and holidays," Mayor Ron Huldai said in a statement Tuesday. "We must ask ourselves — what does a person who can't afford to buy a car and wants to visit his family or go to the beach do?"

The national transportation ministry had no comment.

Public transportation is decided on the national level, so the city has no power to enforce such a move. But should the bill be rejected, as expected, Tel Aviv's city hall said it will establish an independent transportation company to run the buses.

Israel Meir Lau, the city's chief rabbi, said Tuesday he felt "great pain and deep disappointment" with the plan and called on the mayor to reverse it.

"This is a severe blow to the sanctity of the Sabbath," he said in a statement. "The city council recommendation harms the status quo upon which the policies of all Israeli governments are based."

Despite Israel's secular majority, ultra-Orthodox rabbis strictly govern Jewish practices such as weddings, burials or conversions and only allow them for those who meet Orthodox definitions of a Jew. Israel grants citizenship to any Jew — Reform, Conservative or Orthodox — but once in Israel, many who consider themselves Jewish cannot get married or have a Jewish burial.

The plight of an eight-year-old girl who was recently spat upon by ultra-Orthodox extremists for dressing "immodestly" drew new attention to the simmering issue.

According to this article the Orthodox Jews don't work and their income is derived from government subsidies. So for them not being able to walk anywhere or use motors etc. is of little consequence. But for the rest of their society losing a day of productivity, when they aren't at work, can have drastic consequences. All the little family jobs have to be done in one day for working people, but the orthodox have 6 full days to do the same kinds of things.
In time the Orthodox Jews will become more tolerant, they really have no other choice. It is so difficult to maintain a democracy based on theology, this has failed in South Africa and Iran among other places, but perhaps Israel is the place where it can be shown to work. Somehow rules have to be thought up that apply to everyone equally, that's where the rubber meets the road. Democracy doesn't exist without these kinds of rules.

Since you are not allowed to turn on the electric lights on the Sabbath . Then the orthodox should insist the power grid should be shut down too. You can be observant without being A PUTZ.

How about this ? If you don't believe in buses running on the Sabbath, then don't ride the bus on the Sabbath !!!
      • RA 3 mths ago
Exactly! Just like if you don't believe in birth control pills or other contraceptive methods, don't use them.

Talk about discrimination, prejudice, bias, etc. give it to the ultra orthodox rabbis!

See any similarities here in the US over birth control just to name one issue. Live your life the way you want but don't try to impose your lifestyle on anyone else.

Letting everyone do as they please is called anarchy. Every society must have certain rules to live by. If there are no rules for society then there is no civilization.
      • Mike E 3 mths ago
MORON. NO I don't see any familiarities you are mentioning. Birth control ? NO PROBLEM but also NO TAX DOLLARS to be used for baby murder.

So if youre an orthodox Jew dont ride the Sabbath buses. How does having the buses on the street impose secular beliefs on you? Are they putting a gun to your head forcing you to ride the buses?

      Get over it.

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them:
When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15:19- 24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?
Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?
Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?
I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)
I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Good questions.I am assuming that you are jewish. Praise Adonai that you are the apple of his eye.Our Elohim the Adonai El Shaddai Sevaroeth (hope the spelling is overcome by you) has set these laws to let all of Israel (sons of God) know that they can not attain godliness through the flesh and the law. This is so that our Lord can show his compassion to us through His mercy and grace. You have one of your own who was sent and fulfilled all the laws and all prophecy for you,me and all who would believe. Study the Torah and the prophets books because they are written accurately about Him hundreds of years before he was born. IF you are serious, then the Lord God of Israel wil lead you into all truth. Isaiah 50 and beyond describes perfectly our savior and king, and what would happen to him.
May God bless you and may you find His truth.

I am Muslim, and I approve of bus service seven days a week.

If the more secular community desires bus service, it will have it- if the Orthodox community members don't wish to utilize the bus system, they are perfectly free to avoid it. So what's the problem? If pork bbq is on the grill, does that mean a Jew- or Muslim, for that matter- is compelled to eat it? No, of course not.

Don't like Saturday buses? Don't ride the bus on Saturday- end of story.

other cities in israel have saturday bus service and these #$%$ have not been this ticked off for decades. its that the average israeli is tired of the ultra-orthodox sucking off the public teat for so long and even the supreme court has told them they have to start participating in the nation . as it is , they are welfare cheats and lazy and just simply don't like their fellow jews, those dirty modern western clothing hebrew speaking infidels. arabs don't attack them much; they are natural allies against the other jews. maybe the capos should not be forced into the army, can't trust them with a rifle. they may emulate their muslim pals and go jihadi. these throwbacks live in ghettos by choice, throw rocks at outsiders and demand welfare checks from the people who actually do work for a living and pay taxes. this complaint is just another effort to undermine the rest of the population and a political ploy. wonder how many ultra -orthodox hypocrites will read this and give me thumbs down. they are not supposed to be on that evil modern infidel internet. the way they multiply like bugs i guess when they get the urge to "social network" they just jump the old lady. i got a solution to their not liking the weekend bus service; don't ride the dammned things. there. solved like solomon the wise. oh, and get the fur bundt rings off your heads! you look like 14th century turkomen nomads. if moses or abraham or jesus had seen people wearing that they would have went, "you look ridiculous".

No one has to travel on a bus on the Sabbath who doesn't want to. Religious kooks forcing their beliefs on others happens all over the world.

I object to the article's characterization of the culture war as "between religious and secular Jews." As the article goes on to point out, there are many Jews who would identify themselves as religious, but who do not adhere to Orthodox strictures. Observant Reform and Conservative Jews make their own decisions about such issues as transportation on the Sabbath, and should be free to do so with out oppression from the government at the hands of the Orthodox minority.

The absence of the Orthodox from the labor force has severe effects on the economy, attested to by world financial institutions. Their absence from the army – as well as the absence of the Arab citizens, who are not drafted for obvious reasons – means that soon almost half the male population will not serve. This compels all the others to serve three full years, and then to do reserve duty for many more years.

Also, very soon, half the first grade pupils in Israel will be religious children, destined for a life without work, without paying taxes or serving in the army – all this paid for by the taxes of the diminishing number of the non-Orthodox

Recently, after deepening unrest between religious and non-religious in Bet Shemesh, 25 km west of Jerusalem, the secularists demanded that the town be divided into two, one half Orthodox and the other secular. The Interior Minister, himself a leader of an Orthodox party, rejected this outright. As he candidly explained. since the Orthodox do not work and cannot pay municipal taxes, they cannot sustain a town of their own. They need the secular to work and pay.

This grotesque situation exists throughout the state. One can calculate when the whole edifice will come crashing down. International financial institutions as well as Israeli experts foretell disaster. Yet our political system does not make any change possible. The hold of the religious parties is as strong as ever.

A song for the occasion: Hassidm on the bus, Hassids are on the bus. Hope it's not a Saturday, there's Hassids on the bus. They're going to ride downtown. On goyim they will frown. Maybe spit on little kids, when Hassids ride the bus. (thank you)

if the Orthodox were in their homes doing what God demands, how would they know if the bus was running or not?
