Telltale Games is Making a Minecraft Spinoff Game

Have you ever thought to yourself, "I wish Minecraft had more of a story"? Then you're in luck: The insanely popular mining, building and survival video game by developer Mojang will soon be getting a spinoff called Minecraft: Story Mode, developed by none other than Telltale Games.

Minecraft: Story Mode was announced today (Dec. 18) via an interactive press release on Mojang's website. Called Info Quest II, the miniature game lets people click through a conversation with a "Mojangster," who reveals that Minecraft: Story Mode will release some time in 2015 for Xbox consoles, PlayStation consoles, PC, Mac, iOS and Androids.

Telltale Games is known for collaborating with other established franchises to create new story-driven games. This year, it released The Walking Dead Season Two, a spinoff of the popular comics and TV show, and Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series, which picks up during Season 3 of HBO's Game of Thrones show and portrays the chaotic events of Westeros from a new perspective.

But its gripping story is not what has endeared Minecraft to millions of people around the world. The game, revolves around players roaming an open world, gathering materials, and crafting those materials into tools, weapons and homes.

"We're not intending on creating an 'official' story for Steve [the official name for the default Minecraft player character], or explaining the world of Minecraft in detail. It will be a cool game," says a press release accompanying Info Quest II.

Nevertheless, story in Minecraft is not without precedent. "Minecraft Novels" about Steve's adventures do exist, though they are not officially associated with Mojang.

Like Telltale's other video games, Minecraft: Story Mode will be episodic, releasing in multiple parts over the course of several months starting later in 2015. You can play the interactive announcement, Info Quest II, on Mojang's website.
