The Ten Golden Globes Things You Need to Know

The Ten Golden Globes Things You Need to Know

The 2012 Golden Globe awards have come and gone, and it was a night of highlights. Well, OK, actually mediumlights. Not lowlights, exactly, but nothing that spectacular happened. That in mind, here are our picks for ten things to know about the 2012 Golden Globes.

RELATED: Ricky Gervais to Host Golden Globes Again

Ricky Gervais' past two hosting stints earned lots of attention for his scandalous and making-fun-of-Hollywood jokes, but the third time was not the charm. His opening monologue was populated by tired old Kim Kardashian and Justin Bieber jokes, while he mostly left the stars in the room alone. Well, there was a riff about "Jodie Foster's Beaver," and about her being a lesbian, but that was about as third-rail as it got. We think we're ready for fresh blood next year.

While it's been the (somewhat) surprise zeitgeist hit of this TV season, earning lots of blog and water cooler chatter (blogs are the new water cooler, after all), its win for Best Drama Series and Best Actress for Claire Danes solidifies it as a bonafide Respected TV Show. This is good news for Showtime, which has had a hard time pushing its popular shows into the prestige realm. (Matt LeBlanc also won for Episodes tonight, so bully for them.) It's also, perhaps, challenging/scary/galvanizing news for HBO, which had two shows up for Best Drama and many other nominations throughout the categories, but only walked away with a pair of trophies for the evening.

The Artist Is Going to Win Lots of Oscars

With wins for Best Score, Best Actor (Comedy), and Best Picture (Comedy), the silent paean to Hollywood is indeed a strong contender for big Oscar glitter. This isn't exactly a surprise, given that it's already won a raft of critics prizes this awards season, but Jean Dujardin is suddenly looking like a challenger to Clooney and Pitt for the Best Actor trophy, given the clear momentum his movie has. The Descendants may have won for Best Picture (Drama) tonight, but it wasn't squaring off against The Artist. We anticipate the latter film winning big come February.

Octavia Spencer Offers a Timely Quote

Winning a Best Supporting Actress award for her assertive work in The Help, longtime character actress Octavia Spencer used a very apt quote in her acceptance speech: "All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence." Not just apt because it was a Martin Luther King, Jr. quote, and tomorrow the nation celebrates his birthday, but because it was a gentle, but firm, response to those that have criticized The Help for forcing black actors into roles of domestic workers. Yes they were playing housemaids, but the profession is a truth of African-American history and, as the quote suggests, should not be dismissed so out-of-hand.

Morgan Freeman Has Had a Great Lifetime

Winning the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award, national treasure Morgan Freeman was given tribute by a less-than-steady but still powerful Sidney Poitier and a cheeky Helen Mirren, and gave a lovely speech about how much he loves doing the work that we love watching him do. Lifetime Achievement award segments are always a bit dull and curiously grim — are we saying he's done?? — but this was one of the better, more spirited ones. A lovely, succinct moment.

Worst Dressed: Sarah Michelle Gellar's Misguided Tie-Dye

Ringer actress Sarah Michelle Gellar maybe shouldn't have let her daughter pick her dress, as her oddly layered, tie-dye/inkblot Monique Lhuillier gown was the most garish, and most summer camp-esque, frock of the night.

Best Dressed: Claire Danes Does Double Duty

Homeland trophy winner Claire Danes stunned with a bold, patterned, textural, yet still classic, look from J. Mendel. Business in the front, party in the rear! (In a non-mullet good way, obvs.) Danes has been on a winning streak these past two years, professionally and sartorially, and we say go, Angela Chase, go!

    Best Tilda Swinton: Tilda Swinton

The Scottish intriguer should really not be considered in any Best/Worst Dressed category because she is always so defiantly a presence unto herself. Tonight she looked like a Borg queen, a Weimar-era newsboy, and a Chinese diplomat all at once. That terrific hair! That wonderful collar! We are so much better off now that Tilda Swinton has entered the awards season mainstream.

    Charlize Theron Was Not Happy

When Michelle Williams, a winner in the Best Actress (Comedy) category for My Week with Marilyn, went up to the stage to accept her prize, the camera smartly cut to beautiful ice queen and fellow nominee Charlize Theron. And, as noted by Atlantic Wire friend Rich Juzwiak, she did not look happy. Maybe she's still in character from Young Adult? Maybe she's just tired? Maybe she's actually mad? Whatever it was, it was a look to freeze bones.

William H. Macy and Felicity Huffman Make Beautiful Music Together

In a mostly staid night, William H. Macy and Felicity Huffman surprised by singing a cute little duet while presenting the Best Actress in a TV drama category. It was completely charming and those two would make an adorable couple. What's that? They've been a couple for years and are great and yay for them? Well, duh.

Oh also, for number 11, Brad Pitt had a cane?
