A 76-year-old Tennessee man died Thursday after being pulled from the surf in Daytona Beach Shores, according to Beach Safety.

It is unknown whether the man drowned or suffered a medical episode. But Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue is warning of hazardous rip currents this weekend.

A family member pulled the man out shortly before 4 p.m. when he was seen unresponsive in the ocean, according to an email from Deputy Chief Tamra Malphurs with Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue. The man had been swimming in an unguarded area at 3100 S. The Beach.

Beach Safety responded and performed CPR, along with Daytona Beach Shores Department of Public Safety and the Volusia Sheriff's Office.

The man was transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, Malphurs wrote. The Volusia Sheriff's Office will conduct the death investigation.

Five people have drowned so far this year on Volusia County beaches, Malphurs wrote. Four of those drownings were rip current-related.

Beach Safety is flying the red flag due to hazardous rip current conditions.
