- World number one Novak Djokovic said he'd let others decide who's favourite for the US Open after expectations soared that Roger Federer could claim a record-extending 18th Grand Slam title at the age of 33.

The Wimbledon champion refused to enter the debate about the likeliest winner before starting his campaign against 79th-ranked Diego Schwartzman on Monday.

"Favorites? I leave it to the people to really judge who is the one, two, three or number four favorite," said Djokovic, who on paper faces a tougher path than Federer with 2012 champion Andy Murray, French dangerman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and big-serving American John Isner in his quarter.

"I know that there is one thing for sure," Djokovic said. "Everybody is starting from scratch. Everybody starts from Monday."

Djokovic beat Federer in the Wimbledon final but the Swiss underlined his strong form by warming up with a victory at this month's Cincinnati Masters.
