However, staff at Terrys Fabrics (Stoke/Stockport) stores have observed that all is not lost. It seems that the next generation of Brits – our children – are being taught some of these basic skills and encouraged to learn handy crafts such as sewing and knitting.
Concerned Grandparents who have seen their own children lack these vital skills are investing time and energy into teaching their grandchildren how to do things for themselves.
Paul McGuinness, Director of Terrys Fabrics comments; “We have noticed an increasing number of grandparents, and grandmothers in particular bringing their grandchildren into our stores to choose fabrics and threads for sewing projects. We already know that many grandparents have taken on the role of carer while their own children are at work and especially with after school and nursery care being so expensive.
“Learning a skill such as sewing fulfills two roles really – the first is that their grandchildren will be more self-sufficient in the future than their own parents and second that it is a really enjoyable way to spend time together, helping to keep the children occupied.
“There is obviously a preference from the children who visit our stores for some of the more brightly coloured fabrics that we have in stock, indeed selecting their own material is part of the excitement of sewing. Many of our children’s fabrics have a starting price of only £7.99 per metre, and a metre of which is enough cloth to make any number of mobile phone holders, doll’s clothes, doll’s bedding and bags to keep the kids busy for some time to come.”
