COMMENTARY | Last week the Texas Department of Motor Vehicle voted to not allow the Confederate Flag on Texas plates. Just scratching the surface, people will portray the Confederate army as racist black haters who were fighting only to keep the institution of slavery alive. This may be true in some instances, but we all know the prevailing army was the North and the North told the story of the South and made them out to be savage racists and made themselves out to be the lover and pusher of equal rights.

If you are a seeker of the truth, there are several instances where you will find facts that are contrary to popular belief.

One such falsehood about the confederate army, is that there were no blacks fighting, which is completely untrue. There aren't any concrete facts but estimates put black soldiers in the confederacy at over 180,000. This alone at that time would have made this the largest standing Black army in the world. Some of these men were free, while many were runaway slaves.

While the North spoke of allowing blacks to serve, it wasn't until after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, that blacks were allowed to serve in the Union Army. Slavery was also made to be the main issue as to why the war was initially started, but it wasn't until much later that the mantra of slavery was picked up by the Union.

Another understated fact is the Confederate Army paid its black soldiers the same as it paid its white soldiers. The Confederate army also employed black chaplains before the Union Army did. In Texas, blacks even were officers. James Kemp Holland became the highest ranking black, obtaining the rank of colonel. Holland also served on the staff of Texas Gov. Pendleton Murrah.

Even Frederick Douglass was aware of blacks serving in the Confederate army and may have said this quote to influence the union to do the same. "There are at present many colored men in the Confederate Army doing duty not only as cooks, servants and laborers, but real soldiers, having musket on their shoulders, and bullets in their pockets, ready to shoot down any loyal troops and do all that soldiers may do to destroy the federal government and build up that of the rebels ".

As we pursue historical facts, let's not make a rush to judgment and explore all of the facts.

History is always written and skewed by the side that won the war.
      • 53 6 mths ago
You're referring to political and military history. The Civil War consisted of more than politics and guns.
    • Perzia Shammas  •  6 mths ago
There were hispanics from Texas fighting for the confederacy as well
      • Watch What U Say 6 mths ago
Very true...They were land owners as well as the blacks who fought.

An article in a July, 1863 issue of the New York Herald newspaper discusses that there were 9 fully armed black confederates captured at Gettysburg. How could anyone with any common sense believe that thousands of Texas soldiers would leave their families alone on what was probably the world's most dangerous frontier at the time (read Wilbargers 1888 book, Indian Depredations in Texas), walk most of 2000 miles and fight and die for the 3% that owned slaves?
      • Mark 6 mths ago
There were close to 200,000 men at Gettysburg on both sides. About 50,000 became casualties. Given that kind of numbers, 9 is tiny. The New York Herald was several hundred miles and several states north. It was before photographs could be sent to newspaper's and battlefield artists illustrated them. There were quite a few Hispanics in the Confederate Army. Even Hispanic Regt.s from Texas. Most stayed in Texas and served on the border. But there were probably a few Hispanic recruits in the Texas units of Lee's army. There were probably a few blacks who fought for personal reasons of some sort. Lee had over 70,000 men at Gettysburg. How much of that many is 9? And the frontier was not where most Texas slaves were. They were in the plantations in southeast Texas and some up in north Texas where D/FW is now. And even if all 9 were definetely African-American Lee's army was drawn from all over the southern states. No way all would have been from Texas. And if there were 180,000 black confederate troops in service a lot would been with Lee. The Army of Northern Va. was the largest and most important confederate army.

Now our soldiers all fight for the 1% that own corporations.
      • RB 6 mths ago
I did not say all 9 were from Texas. I have no idea where they were from. My point is that most folks would not fight and die for 4 years for the less than 3% who owned slaves. They were fighting for their homes and country. Look what the south put in their constitution as well - term limit for president, each bill about only one subject, no riders allowed, balanced budget, post office had to be self sufficient, etc. The war was not fought about slavery. Slavery had a lot to do with secession, but the battle flag is the soldiers flag and the license plate issue is about the logo which incorporates the battle flag and has done so since 1896. With regards to the accuracy of the New York Herald in 1863 I have no comment - who knows, it is what they reported. Frederick Douglas said similar things about blacks fighting for the confederacy.

The black soldiers likely served for the same reason as many white Confederate soldiers - to get some needed money. If you're a poor farmer, you could use cash. There were black soldiers on both sides. Just like there were colonists who fought for England as well as the new America.
      • 53 6 mths ago
there were no black soldiers fighting for the confederacy. the article is not true. there was a regiment of free blacks, but they were never allowed to fight.
      • Mark 6 mths ago
53 is right. There was a black Regiment that began to be raised in the last few months of the war in early 1865. It was never in combat because it was never recruited up to Regiment strength or trained. Recruits were promised freedom to join. By late winter in 1865 it was clear the south was on it's last legs and no point to that for blacks. There were a few indviduals and even very small units that fought for the south though for various personal reasons. The 180,000 black troops were union troops! And more than a few defended the Texas frontier after the Civil War. It was a pretty thankless job given Jim Crow law and attitudes then. But they did the duty superably! Trying to claim 180,000 black confederate soldiers is just another take on the old storys that black people were content as slaves and slave owners were benolvent parents to their slaves. Slavery was a hard and brutal economic system that stretched back thousands of years. In many nations and cultures. In many forms. It still exists today in various ways. And various places.

53 and Mark, you are totally discounting the fact that black Confederates were interspersed throughout Southern units......unlike the Union which had segregated units that paid blacks less. “When you eliminate the black Confederate soldier, you’ve eliminated the history of the South.” Dr. Leonard Haynes, Southern Univ.

Most people don't want the facts. They only want someone to agree with what they believe whether it is right or wrong.

To the question as to why Lincoln simply did not 'let the erring sisters go and depart in peace', the prospect of loosing three quarters of the Federal revenue stream obviously played a major role in his decision. Certainly, other factors contributed to the war, but as history is written by the winners, it is totally unsurprising that Northern writers latched on to the high moral issue of ending slavery, rather than more complicated issues, which might favor the Southern cause. For example, in September of 1862, President Lincoln announced the Emancipation Proclamation, to take effect January 1, 1863, and free slaves in those states or regions still in rebellion against the Union. If any southern state returned to the Union between September and January, whites in that state would not lose ownership of their slaves. Clearly, the federal government was more interested in regaining power over the run-away states than in freeing slaves. The Northern banner of "Preserve the Union" was not unlike a failed marriage where one party beats the other senseless in order to "Preserve the Marriage"; a more accurate banner flown by the North would have read "Preserve the Taxes".
    • Kelly  •  6 mths ago
The war was started because politicians were bought and paid for back then too.The gubnet in Washington was getting bigger and bigger and 80% of their revenue was from import export taxes. Factories up north wanted southern cotton cheap so instead the southerners were selling it to England and France. Lincoln was going to raise the taxes so they would be forced to sale it to his campaign supporter companies up north. The rebellion started in all port cities Charleston, Savannah, New Orleans and the rest. Hell NYC tried to succeed from NY state. If slavery was the reason then why did Lincoln only free the slaves under Confederate control after 2 years of war? He did that to get the abolisionist support for his reelection the next year.

Additionally, Texan Confederates, who fought throughout the Confederacy, also numbered many hispanics and in South Texas, primarily hispanic regiments saw service. See: Battle Flags of Texans in the Confederacy in many local libraries on amazon. Also note that Confederates fought under many different designs of flags. The "battleflag" as popularly seen today became more used as the war progressed and eventually became known as "the battle flag" and it predominated especially in the last two years of the war, but even at the end of the war, many Texans were fighting under different regimental colors. I really would like to see the SCV Texas Division use a state design like the famous "Wigfall" Lone Star Flag with tilted start flown by the 1st Texas Infantry during the war. Indeed, many Texan Confederates fought under the state flag and all knew it.
    • JED  •  6 mths ago
Not a single slave was brought to this country under the Confederate flag ... of ANY color.
    • SomethingClever  •  6 mths ago
History... HIS STORY... as in the one told by the victors. There has been "spin" since time began and most people simply believe what they are told. There was A LOT more to the Civil War than slavery. History also makes Lincoln out to be the savior to the slaves, yet he was pressured into agreeing to the Emancipation Proclamation.

it's wrong to take a piece of this country's heritage just to honor African heritage. The Confederate flag was the flag of the south and blacks fought to keep it flying then. My family were southern plantation owners. According to family stories - the black people on he plantation fought side by side with my uncles. They all fought together to protect the land they lived on. To keep the plantation together and to keep their homes from being burnt. Now they are trying to change history. Well here's a change - my southern relatives to this day will still run you off their property if you say the North won. lol I don't think we should be banning the confederate flag.

I'm not telling you to fly it. I'm not asking you to fly it. But I will fly it till I die! If you do not like it, ok. I can probably name several things I don't like about you. But I'm not gonna tell you. Here's a thought....Mind your own freakin business!!!

I knew blacks served in the conferate army, but never dreamed it was 180,000. If that many where did they serve and why have we not heard of their regiments and divisions?

Anti=confederates are unwilling and incapable of accepting truth because it would shake their personal biases and political beliefs to the core. Just as most blacks are unwilling to accept that MLK and his father were both proud Republicans.
