Texas Congressmen Press NASA for Documents on Shuttle Display Venues

According to the Houston Chronicle, a group of Texas congressmen are still unhappy the Obama administration snubbed the home of the Johnson Spaceflight Center when it came to displaying a space shuttle orbiter.

The congressmen, led by Pete Olson, are demanding answers.

Why are the Texas congressmen unhappy?

The problem started in April, when NASA Administrator Charles Bolden announced the selection of the final resting places of the space shuttle orbiter fleet. Discovery went to the Smithsonian in Washington. Atlantis went to Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Endeavour went to the California Space Center. Enterprise, the drop test article that was never launched into space, went to the Intrepid Air and Space Museum in New York.

Houston, where the control center of all American space flights has resided since 1965, was snubbed, according to Texas politicians. Space Center Houston had planned to display a space shuttle orbiter next to the Saturn V, with a climate controlled enclosure.

A NASA Inspector General Report that failed to find undue political influence has not assuaged the outrage of Texans. Bolden changed the criteria for displaying a shuttle from the principle one being a historical relationship with the shuttle program to the location being a high-traffic area for tourists.

    The New York Relocation

To add fuel to the fire, in September, New York officials decided to change the venue for the display of the Enterprise. Instead of an enclosure at a pier next to the Intrepid Air and Space Museum, Enterprise would be parked in a building to be built in a parking lot across the West Side Highway from the Intrepid on 12th Avenue. This move had the Texans crying bait and switch.

What do the Texas congressmen want?

The Texas congressmen are demanding documents. Along with members from Utah, Mississippi and Ohio, the congressmen want the Intrepid Museum's original design proposal, the minutes of a meeting that took place in April in which various display plans were discussed, and a report whether moving Enterprise to New York would cause damage to the shuttle's structure.

NASA's official position is it has no plans to re-evaluate the decision to display Enterprise in New York. NASA maintains New York's decision to display the shuttle across the highway from the Intrepid Museum is in compliance with obligations to the space agency.

Texas resident Mark Whittington writes about state issues for the Yahoo! Contributor Network.

Why are Texas Republicans concerned now with Education and our space program, obviously being ranked 46th in Education, wanting to cut the Department of Education and with Governor Perry cutting $4 Billion in Education, its evident that this is just pandering for votes.

It's such a pity Houston politicians waited until *now* to realize they had to actually take action to get a Shuttle, and that it wouldn't merely be handed to them on a silver platter. It's too late now, and you shouldn' t need any special extra documents to tell why; it's plain as day. They didn't raise the minimum funds needed for consideration, they didn't identify a suitable site, and they didn't submit a plan for indoor display and conservation of the vehicle. It's like forgetting to fill out an application and then complaining that McDonald's didn't hire you.

They have a Saturn V sitting on the front lawn of Johnson Space Center that has gone to crap, why should they be allowed to have a shuttle sit on the front lawn and go to crap also?

Lets say this if education was a priority they wouldn't have cut billions of dollars every year in Texas on education right.

Of course the selection was partly political. Why do you think the Johnson space flight center is in Texas? Political maybe? Too bad for Texas that the decision did not come up when Bush was king. Stop whining.

Through military bases and in it's heyday NASA, Texas has gotten more than their share of American tax dollars. Did it ever dawn on you that the Johnson Space Center should have been built next to Cal-Tech in the first place. The only reason it ended up in Dallas (not exactly the scientific center of the country in 1965) was because Johnson was in the White House.

Your Governor is Rick Perry! For crying out loud you are embarrassing the rest of the country.

Texas is a wasteland when it comes to education or educated people (and I don't mean religion either).

I'd like to see the Texas congressional delegation act like adults for a change and make an effort to get Houston's horrible traffic congestion improved by a dramatic expansion of mass transit insterad of toll roads.

they want the space shuttles to be tourist attractions.....Texas is not attractive unless u like lackluster sports teams or enjoy owning a arsenal of guns

I can see why the Texans are moaning about the selection for display sites.
The Enterprise should NEVER be displayed with anything that has to do with the Intrepid,
Also, the last thing New York needs is less parking, I would think that the J C Stenis facility would have been a better option than New York.

Yet, if you don't do your paperwork, this is the kind of crap that happens.

Texans don't care about the knowledge gained from the Space Shuttles. They just like feeling superior to the rest of the world by having a maned space flight program.

Love the picture of a maned space flight program.

I say the people of america should cry out to the idiot digbats who think they know best but all they think of is how much monies they will make from you and I to stuff their greedy idea of making monies off the space program. I mean please. We'll be lucky if we make as much monies as we did when their were nations around the world paying us millions of dollars to bring their satelites up into orbit. Repair their ailing satelites and the millions the science fields paid astronauts to do their experiments in space. Breaking up the fleet was the most idiotic, dimwitted and just plain stupid idea from our as usual not thinking of the AMERICAN people democrat who think ending the shuttle program would help pay down the debt they increased our national debt by. And then they feel that didn't do it so now we have to fire AGAIN upwards of 40% of our active duty military force. A dimwitted thing to do seeings like in the past and on bills watch we have iran behaving like a bully in the school yard daring us to defend ourselves from whatever they might toss our way. And like in the past we have americans given permission to visit family there taken hostage and held on trumped up charges so they can get some rich shek to give them millions. Americans kidnapped and brought to iran for a bogus trial so they again can get millions from a shek because all irans revenue is gifted to hezbollah so their people have nothing even though iran has the largest amount of oil and natural gas among the nations who have the energies. Some one tell the dems there is no such animal as a peaceful one as long as the human race has islam as a cult living among it. Tell the idot dimwitted dems that we didn't need to end the shuttle program when it was making monies for it's missions. The only place those vehicles belong is in the kenneday space center ready for a mission. Not collecting dust and deteriorating do to lack of use and care. Put the fleet back together and do it one better. Fit the enterprise for a trip so we can finally see our vote mattered. I remember my senior yr like it was yesterday when nasa ran a name the shuttle contest and we all wanted the first shuttle to FLY IN SPACE. And wham our hearts were dash to find out it never will. that was disheartening. And an act that should be rethought. These are our legacy they deserve to function until they are replaced. Dems should never have ended our space program for the delusion that private companies would work to design vehicles and devices that interchange among them. It's delusional to the point of mental to think a private company would design their product around the idea of anotherand expect that company wouldn't sue for infringment rights. WE WERE THE LEADERS OF THE SPACE RACE, PROGRAM AND WE SHOULD REGAIN THE LEAD AND STAY THERE. If dems don't want to be involved no problem they don't have to be and we won't allow them to steal revenue fromt he program for pork projects like do flies blink.

Endeavor went to the California Science Center, not the "California Space Center".
    • Kirstin  •  3 mths ago
Minor clarification to my last post -- the article claims Space Center Houston planned to display the Orbiter in a climate-controlled environment. They had to do more than that; they had to submit specific plans. A large part of the application process was merely proving that they could reasonably be ready to receive the Orbiter in time, and that eliminated many of the contenders immediately. Including Houston.
      • RedGlare 3 mths ago
Actually, this is incorrect. A plan to house the orbiter was in place as per the guidelines stated in the application process. It is important to review all of the facts before making such negative comments.
      • Kirstin 3 mths ago
It wasn't complete enough. My opinion is heavily informed by the remarks made by Houston resident and long time Shuttle program director Wayne Hale. They needed more than what Houston submitted.

As far as whether New York should have gotten Enterprise, that's an entirely different question. That part might deserve investigation. It seems pretty clear to me that NASA could not have given an Orbiter to Houston without violating its selection rules, and that *would* have been unfair.
    • Brian  •  Surfside, California  •  3 mths ago
Houston, you have a problem. The Johnson space center is more a playground for kids shooting rubber balls with air cannons than a museum. The Saturn V display is very poor when compared to the Kennedy Space Center.

Houston has jobs, jobs, jobs.... they are carrying the other major cities and States. Working Californians and wealthy Mexicans who own companies are moving to Houston. LOL, at the clowns on the blogs below. Go freeze in the dark!

Where is Sheila Jackson Lee in all this? Oh, of course... she supports Obama and Bolden not her supporters in Houston.
