Texas Gov. Perry jumps into 2012 Republican race

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Texas Gov. Rick Perry officially joined the Republican presidential race Saturday with a full-throated promise to reduce the role of the federal government, saying his goal as president would be to make Washington "as inconsequential in your lives as I can."

Speaking to voters here and later in New Hampshire, the Texan cast himself as a Washington outsider who would restore fiscal responsibility at home and U.S. "exceptionalism" in the world.

"We don't see the role of government as guaranteeing outcomes, but allowing free men and women to flourish based on their own vision, their hard work and their personal responsibility," said Perry, who has never held a private sector job and is in his third term as governor.

His nationally televised announcement before a large group of conservative activists in the first-in-the-South primary state of South Carolina came — not coincidently — the same day as Iowans weighed in on the GOP field with a test vote. His entrance in the field capped a remarkable turn of events.

As recently as a few months ago, Perry foreswore any interest in running for president.

He reversed course after it became clear that the Republican establishment wasn't rallying around any single candidate and that many in the GOP electorate had reservations about their choices, including former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, until now the front-runner in early polls four years after losing his first presidential campaign.

Perry's entry in the race promised to upend a field that includes Romney, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, who won the Iowa straw poll Saturday. Other contenders include former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Texas Rep. Ron Paul and pizza magnate Herman Cain.

Perry is viewed as one of the few GOP candidates who can unite disparate elements of the Republican coalition. He has the backing of many tea party supporters, and is popular among social conservatives for his opposition to abortion and gay rights. He is also an evangelical Christian and hosted a prayer rally last weekend in Texas that drew thousands of attendees.

He's spent the past few weeks assembling a national finance team supporters say could rival President Barack Obama's. The president is on track to match or exceed the record-breaking $750 million he raised in 2008.

His fundraising prowess aside, Perry has never run a national campaign before and his deeply conservative views may not sit well with voters in some parts of the country. His candidacy will also be a test of whether Americans are ready to elect as president another Texas governor, so soon after former President George W. Bush left office with record low approval ratings.

As most of his rivals gathered in Iowa, Perry held a conference call with Republican activists in South Carolina.

"I full well believe I'm going to win," he said on the call.

Then, he used his speech addressing the so-called RedState gathering of conservative bloggers to deliver a withering critique of "broken" Washington, which he said mismanaged its finances and levied undue regulation on people's lives and businesses. He slammed the deal struck by Obama and congressional leaders last week to raise the debt ceiling; a downgrade of the nation's credit rating by a lead ratings agency came just days later.

"This is just the most recent downgrade," Perry said. "The fact is for nearly three years President Obama has been downgrading American jobs. He's been downgrading our standing in the world. He's been downgrading our financial stability. He's been downgrading our confidence, and downgrading the hope for a better future for our children."

"One in six work-eligible Americans cannot find a full-time job. That is not a recovery. That is an economic disaster," Perry added.

Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt released a statement slamming Perry before his speech had even concluded — a move that signaled the campaign views Perry's candidacy as a threat.

Perry continued to promote his economic record after traveling from South Carolina to New Hampshire, the first-in-the-nation primary state. The reason was obvious, he said.

"I intend to compete for every vote in every state," he said, speaking to roughly 100 supporters gathered next to the backyard pool of a state representative. "This isn't a strategy just to go work in a few places. I'm going to be all across this country."

He is to visit Iowa Sunday, appearing at the same event as Bachmann.

"Make Washington as "inconsequential" to Americans' lives as possible". Ok I'm listening. Now first swear that you'll get rid of Washinton's Big Oil subsidies, and then I'll really start listening.

Washington will continue to ruled by lobbyists no matter what. To make DC inconsequential, it would take a maverick B-2 pilot or some Al Queda-type action..

Richard:No State is more ruled by lobbyists than TEAXAS! Signed, A Texan.

Karl, try CA run by the unions and democrats, in that order.

Baseball Fan: how about the subsidies for GE?

That's because here in Texas he is a joke!! If it weren't for big, big money he would not have been re-elected. He is ruining Texas despite what he might say!!

Perry is the Jim Jones of politics. A fast talker in an expensive suit pandering to the religious community to garner votes. Don't drink the toxic Kool Aid folks. The only thing he loves more than money is Koch.Vote Ron Paul 2012!

He was an Al Gore supporter and a democrat before Al lost the presidency. He attended a Bilderberger conference in violation of federal law. He supported a bill to force every teenage girl in Texas to take the Guardasil vaccine despite reports that it had already killed several girls and injured many more (of course his chief of staff was a former Merck executive). He supported using eminent domain laws to steal a half a million acres from Texans to build the Nafta Superhighway from Mexico to Canada. Rick is completely unworthy of any republican support.

I saw if you were a democrat and then becomes a republican at least it means you think and will change your mind, unlike these other people who will not even listen to the other side clue ("OBAMA")

Just watch his own party rip him to shreds. They're so used to screwing the country with dirty tricks, they do it to their own now.

We are building the wall on the wrong Texas border. Trying to send another stupid person to be president is not a good idea. Texans never really were attuned to the concept that intelligence is required in order to do difficult jobs.

Perhaps, instead of voting on the "side of liberals or conservatives", how about the people voting on the different plans. And please, no double jargon just plain simple facts-i.e.,
Cut Congress pay and benefits by 50% Yes No
Cut lifetime benefits for all senators and house reps to comparable of everyday Joe.
Penalize all American owners by increasing taxes by 25% on profits of their companies from all foreign countries. Yes No
No more than 2 terms for any governmental, judicial and executive official. Yes No
      No more lobbyist. Yes No
Must balance the budget by end of 2013. Yes No
Impose a "fee" from all countries we are helping by price reduction of oil of 49%. Yes No
Much more could be added, but you get the picture.

About Dr. Ron Paul and why he is a better choice than Rick Perry:
Please correct me on anything I am wrong about below.
      1. He is not an isolationist. He promotes free trade so anyone who calls him isolationist you already know has not done their research.
      2. He is not pro-drugs. He does go by the constitution though and believes people should choose for themselves and treat as a drug problem not a criminal problem
      3. He sounds crazy on the economy but he accurately predicted, along with other followers of the Austrian economic school, the housing bubble over 5 years before it happened and kept warning. Same with our current economic crisis and yet people call him "crazy" because he doesn't follow the flawed logic of the Keynesian school of economics which has been in effect.
      4. He is a vet, gets the highest contributions from military for the GOP and all but the CIC, and is against the unconstitutional wars we are fighting. So those thinking his foreign policy is absurd, maybe listen to the vets and service members being sent away for profit instead of being armchair warmongers.
      5. Accepts no money from lobbyists. Whereas Romney and Perry are the 2 highest.
      6. He is a doctor and reports from constituents in his area claim he has delivered many babies to low income families for free. Over 4,000 babies total.
      7. Has voted by the Constitution for his entire record in congress
      8. He is brutally honest even though its not what people want to hear most the time
      9. He is religious but has does not dictate his political decisions
      10. In 2010 he was reelected with 81% of the vote, and has a 84% approval rating. Has been around a long time and stays true to those he represents.
So lets see here. We have a chance to vote for a Doctor rather than a lawyer. That is a vet, accepts no lobbyist money, knows the economy, really promotes freedom, has the best and most realistic foreign policy plan which doesn't include illegal wars or conflicts, has energized people that were formally apathetic to politics which any other candidate would love to have, raises mass amounts of money from the grass roots, and gains more support every day. Unelectable, I would hate to see what is required to be electable at this rate if this man and his principles are not enough. Oh yeah, I forgot it's because he doesn't follow groupthink mentality like the rest of the candidates who are just now coming around to the Constitution...well say they do in one sentence then discredit themselves the next (Bachmann, Perry and Santorum especially).

Sorry for the novel and thanks for reading. Just tired of Dr Paul being misrepresented and ignored because MSM doesn't endorse him and more often than not people are too lazy to research the truth for themselves.

Another business owner moves to Texas.....“I have no second thoughts, no qualms, no reluctance about what I’ve done and moved to Texas,” said Joe DeInnocentes, a California transplant. “I’m not sure I’d ever go back to California, quite frankly.”

I am a native Texan and here are a few things about Rick Perry:
Thanks to Perry the school here are ranked 47th and there is a multi-billion dollar deficit (approximately $4-billion) that his policies created. He was warned by the then Republican State comptroller 5-years ago that his tax cuts were going to cause the problem that Texas schools are going through right now
He tried to take private land here through eminent domain so that a Spanish company, Cintra could build the Trans-Texas Corridor, a super transportation system that no one really wanted and has since been canceled. More and more of the new highways build here in Texas are toll-roads, the latest is the State Highway 121 project another controversial tollway project involving Cintra. Cintra would have the right to collect tolls on the road for 50-years. There were a lot of questions raised when it came out that the North Texas Tollway Authority was preventing from bidding on this project. There are a number of unanswered questions about Perry's relationship with Cintra, the Spanish company that I am sure will come out during the presidential campaign.
He also pushed a program to require 13-year old middle school girls be vaccinated with a very controversial drug created by Merck intended to prevent cervical cancer. There were a lot of questions raised about his motives and he dropped his push for the program when the questions became too hot about the program. Again, a lot of these questions centered around his financial relationship with Merck.
There are just a few issues that will be raised during the vetting process and it is doubtful that he will be able to survive the scrutiny of the national press. As we in Texas have found out, Rick Perry is not who he purports to be.

Ask Perry about the "Light up Texas" fund. Ask any of the scumbag republicans in Texas that .."balanced the budget" as they put it. They put a spin on the debt and unemployment and a spin on the budget, lay off a BUNCH of teachers and 'voila' a candidate is created. Sprinkle with Jesus and a tax cut and you have the GOP political strategy. I wonder which albatross he will tie to his neck as VP.

What scares me most is to think that a lot of people on this blog actually have the right to vote. If you vote by the standards and intelligence that you use to write on this blog, we are in big trouble.

I couldn't even consider anyone who would make such an idiotic statement as anything but a buffoon, not a viable candidate for the President of the United States.

Anyone who would believe Perry creates jobs is foolish, just ask the 1000 teachers and support staff who lost jobs in Austin -the Texas capitol. he also was responsible for the largest government land grab ever -taking private land just so his foreign investors could build toll roads that gives no money to the state. He is the only governor to win with less than a majority of votes in each election he has garnered the most votes 25% -33% of the total votes but the majority of voters voted for other candidates so he wins because of the split vote. Add to that voter counting irregularities ala George Bush - Make no mistake Texas as a whole hates him.

is he running for president of texas, didn't he want to secede from this country earlier this year, so why is he running for president
    • Sail On  •  9 mths ago
I'm a lifelong Texan & have watched Perry since he entered politics. On April 15, 2009 he
said Texas has the right to secede from the Union. Any Texan who considers any
scenario whereby Texas would secede is wholly unfit to be President of the United States
of America. My fellow Patriots, reject Perry for any national office. America first, last &
      always. God bless America
