Texas Man Who Fatally Shot Deputy Darren Goforth Deemed Incompetent for Upcoming Trial

The man who allegedly shot to death Texas Texas Deputy Darren Goforth in Harris County last August has been deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial for the officer's murder.

PEOPLE confirms that Shannon Miles, 31, will be committed to a state hospital for the next four months, after which he'll be reassessed by psychiatrists.

Texas District Judge Susan Brown made the determination that Miles' trial should be postponed until he is found competent enough for the impending court proceedings, officials tell PEOPLE.

Miles' defense attorney, Anthony Osso, has argued in open court that his client has long suffered from schizophrenia, according to court sources.

Osso did not return calls on Wednesday seeking comment.

Goforth, a 47-year-old deputy with the Harris County Sheriff's Office in Texas, died a week after being shot from behind while pumping gas in Houston. He was wearing his uniform at the time.

In a statement obtained by PEOPLE, the Harris County Sheriff's Office expressed disappointment with the judge's ruling.

However, the statement added that the department and its members "remain hopeful that the state will restore Shannon Miles' competency promptly so justice can be sought."
