Texas Panhandle wildfire destroys about 75 homes

FRITCH, Texas (AP) — Firefighters have stopped the spread of flames in a wildfire in the Texas Panhandle.

Officials said Monday afternoon that firefighters are now mostly responding to hotspots and smoldering buildings.

The wildfire broke out Sunday.

Emergency officials say about 75 homes were destroyed and hundreds of people evacuated from a 4-square-mile area around Lake Meredith.

No one has been reported injured from the fire near the small town of Fritch, some 30 miles northeast of Amarillo.

Hutchinson County's assistant emergency management coordinator Jason Wright says a mobile-home community is at the center of the blaze.
