Texas Wildfires Still Uncontained, More Than 1,000 Homes Lost

This story comes from the Yahoo! Contributor Network, where individuals publish their unique perspectives on some of the world’s most popular websites.

FIRST PERSON | Due to a yearlong drought, months of extreme temperatures and high winds from Tropical Storm Lee, Texas is facing some of the worst wildfires in history. More than 1,000 homes have been lost so far and more than 5,000 evacuated. There is no end in sight to the fires at this time.

We had more than 70 straight days of triple-digit temperatures before Lee brought us some much-needed relief. The only problem? It also brought a great deal of wind, which was the perfect scenario to spark wildfires. Currently, my house is safe but smoke fills the air all around and several small fires are just miles from my house. They are contained right now and we continue to hope they stay that way. Nearby military base Fort Hood is supplying all the forces its can to the areas affected, but Fort Hood itself is burning.

Currently the fire at Fort Hood poses no threat to residential structures but residents with asthma and respiratory problems are advised to stay indoors and avoid smoke exposure as much as possible. This is another fear for my family as I am nearly six months pregnant, have asthma and allergies and all four of my children have asthma and allergies. For now, we're staying inside and keeping up with updates in case evacuation is called in our area.

    Rick Perry Returns to Texas

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who is running as a Republican presidential candidate, cut short his campaign visit in South Carolina Monday to return to the state and help.

"I urge Texans to take extreme caution as we continue to see the devastating effects of sweeping wildfires impacting both rural and urban areas of the state," Perry said in a statement, reports Reuters.

However, overnight 22 new fires erupted, 10 of them classified as "large" by the Texas Forest Service. Combined, these new fires have already consumed 7,544 acres of area across Texas. While Central Texas is being hit the hardest, there are more than 85 active wildfires burning in the state, with some stretching into neighboring states Arkansas, Oklahoma and Louisiana as well.

Texans are encouraged to avoid any activities that could increase the danger of fires, avoiding tossing out cigarettes (even when you think they have been put out) and avoid any and all outdoor burning. Burn bans have already been in effect for almost all of the state's 254 counties. However, some people are unaware of how easily a fire can be started in such extreme drought conditions. A spark from a power line can be all it takes to ignite a massive wildfire like the ones we are seeing right now.

This map shows wildfires larger than 100 acres of area since Sept. 5, 2011.

Right after 9/11 this Country was United, people were helping each other holding doors saying hello. What teh fuck happened in the last 10 years? Is the media that influential to pit everyone against each other? What happened to Obama and his so called change?

I have one solution for two problems. The mississippi overflowing all the time and Texas alwyas in a drought. Build a canal that diverts water from Mississippi all the way to Texas.
Put many people to work and build up Texas's agriculture.

Good idea: maybe you can also float Canadian land down to Virginia where it's warmer so crops can grow. BTW, is your name Trig?

It took over a decade and hundreds of lives to complete both the Suez and Panama canals, both of which are a considerably shorter distance than what you propose. Good to be thinking in that direction, but bad idea.

We are all suffering in one way or another. Anyone wishing bad on someone will be paid with Karma dollars. So just remember when your dad or mom or sister or someone you know for that matter gets sick or suddenly dies. This is the same you wished on someone else.

"What was it that an Enron Trader said about California the wild fires that cropped up during the summers of 2000-01 when they F*CKED the state out of $40+ Billion dollars...? Oh yeah...BURN, BABY, BURN!

What comes around goes around, TUCK FEXAS!"

How did this enormous fire become political. I don't think that a politician giving a speech will put it out. only God can do that now.bring on a tropical storm or a hurricane we could use the rain from them now. May God watch over all those souls fighting the fire and everyone affected by it. Also I am not a religious fanatic but there are times where you have to put your faith in God because He has more power than we can imagine.

yeah, but does Eric Cantor care about the victims? No way. NO DISASTER AID FOR VICTIMS, he says, unless the money comes out of Social Security or Medicare. It's all about spending for him. Human suffering doesn't count.

I would just like to know why the only way I can find out info on all the fires is by Facebook?!?!?! No local news, national...NOTHING! I was living in Nashville when we had that major flood and news of that was everywhere, but half the state of TX is on fire and no one seems to care! People are loosing their lives, their lively hoods and their homes and Texans are the only ones doing anything about it! And people wonder why we are so proud to be Texan!
      • Chris 8 mths ago
it's all over the news - maybe the main story on Anderson Cooper CNN. And you're responding to this on Yahoo....
      • Joey from Houston 8 mths ago
ktrh.com is one of our local stations that should show maps and articles. You will not find accurate information about anything in TX from national outlets.
      • Mary K 8 mths ago
Google Texas Forest Service for some info, the weather channel is also covering it, and I have been told that the fire departments have face book accounts and are constantly posting info. hope that helps.

Texas is a culturally diverse state, with many residents who've migrated here from other states and countries because Texas has jobs, low taxes, low housing costs, and some of the nicest people in the country. I was born and raised in Chicago, but Texas is my HOME! For you to say "God Hates Texas," or "Burn Baby Burn," and some of the other ignorant comments posted here, only makes me question your motives to do so -- and makes me thankful that you aren't a neighbor of mine!

How can Perry possibly go on Vacation to attend a GOP Saturday Night Live skit while his state is in this kind of crisis? Is his campaign paying for the trip or is he paying for it himself, or is the Texas taxpayer paying for it? Or even more likely is he using Federal Stimulus money to attend the Gala event?

For those pathetic haters typing Burn Baby Burn...a baby did burn! The 18month old died along with her mother. Now carry on with your pitiful angry life and continue to be no use to society.

What is wrong with you people? The people who have lost their homes are just people like you and me....maybe not you. If ya'll would turn off your computers, tvs and go live life you will find that Americans are out there and are good people. No one deserves what is happening in Texas and our surrounding states. We are not Bush or Perry. We are just Americans who live in Texas trying to be good citizens of the planet, love God and raise our families.
    • RC  •  8 mths ago
I see that Satan has called upon his followers to spew their hate. Keep it up, you’re just showing everyone how pathetic you are.

What I don't understand is that these people really hate texas, but not all texas are religious nuts and are rich and hate the country. The reason why we have this weather is just because its like that. Stop hating on us texas people. We did nothing bad.
    • Susan  •  8 mths ago
I don't understand the hate and wishing people dead on some of these comments? I have lived in Austin for 51 years, is it because you hate Bush Sr., Bush Jr. and or Perry? I dislike all three, the Bush's are not native Texans, I didn't vote for any of them, will not vote for Perry.
