Thailand Floods Devastate Tourist Industry: Possible $800 Million in Losses

As Figures Are Released About Possible Losses to Thai Tourism Industry, Thais Who Work in it Continue to Worry

BANGKOK -- A week ago, the Tourism Department released a report showing losses to Thailand's tourism industry, because of the country's devastating floods, may be worse than originally feared. A loss of 25 billion baht, or $800 million, is likely if floods continue through December.

Then today, the Director of the Provincial Tourism Authority of Thailand said the city of Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and under flood waters for three months, lost six billion baht, or $192 million. A massive amount for a small city that's one of Thailand's most popular tourist destinations. To say Thais are worried about the huge loss of tourists is an understatement.

My boyfriend is a Thai tour guide who works for a large American tour company that runs many tours in Thailand every month. In October, as floods seeped into Bangkok, not only did my boyfriend's house in Rangsit end up under waist-deep water, he was also worried about losing work.

Groups of American tourists arrive in Bangkok every 18 days. They then spend 16 days being shown around Thailand and Cambodia by my boyfriend. When floods hit, several tourists on each tour group he runs canceled and others called him considering canceling, as they were worried about having to wade through flood water. That he talked them into coming on the tour says a lot for his people skills but, that other guides in the company couldn't shows how many tourists simply decided to stay away.

But, even when tourists arrived, his problems didn't stop there. Several trip destinations in Thailand, including Ayutthaya, had to be changed as these places were now under water. His company eventually decided to have the group spend less time in Bangkok, avoid Ayutthaya completely (they had to, the whole city was under eight feet of water), and spend a few extra days in Cambodia instead. It meant a lot of work and reorganization for my boyfriend, but at least he kept his job. For now.

In the past few years though, Thailand has had a myriad of problems that have kept tourists away. The enormous tsunami that hit southern Thailand in 2004 killed more than 10,000 people and severely damaged Thailand's tourist industry. A year and a half later, Thailand had a military coup. Bird flu followed that.

In 2008, the People's Alliance for Democracy held massive anti-government protests shutting down all of the country's airports for a week, and stranding over 700,000 tourists in Thailand. Finally, last year, more anti-government demonstrations, this time from a different group, ended in some tourist areas in downtown Bangkok being shut down completely, as more than 50,000 protesters camped out there for over a month. The situation ended when 91 civilians were shot and killed by the Thai military. And, with every bullet fired, there went Thailand's tourist industry. Again.

    And now we have floods.

To say Thailand's tourism industry can't catch a break… an understatement? You betcha.

Not raining here in Bangkok, but my street is still knee deep in putrid water. Parts of this city may still take weeks to dry.

This is sad news. I was in Thailand at this time exactly one year ago. It was one of the most amazing experiences I ever had and I learned so much...people were so friendly too. I would love to travel there again.

Your factual reporting is WRONG!@ I can find at least 3 SERIOus errors in factual content. Yes I live here and I'm a journalist. 1: Approx 7,500 died in the tsunami- near 10,000, but NOT.91 civilians were not shot and killed by the military as simple as that- Like they were lined up, unarmed and executed- HARDLY(Imagine an armed and dangerous OWS protest in Times Square for a month+.. Uh NYPD?SWAT would go ballistic in 24 hours- hell, a NY Minute! The hard core Red Shirts protesters that held the city hostage for amonth were more in the range of a few thousand for the final 2-3 weeks after REPEATED efforts to dissuade them and the protest was illegal under the emrgency decree and while the army faced off with them and they were armed to the teeth and wanted violent confrontation just so pinhead plebe writers would regurgitate the #$%$ as fact, per the bleeding heart mindset of the BBC, CNN, etc who would fly in for a quickie 2-3 day special report and leave w/out knowing the lead up, background and Thai people's true struggles behind the scenes.PLEASE FIND A COMPETENT EDITOR IF YOU HAVE ONE- but hey who cares @ accuracy right? This is Yahoo amateur night

I am in Thailand now, and as horrible as the flooding is for the Thais, the tourist destinations and areas, except for Ayudya were untouched. This is a perfect time for tourists to come, the weather is perfect and there are no crowds. Come now if you can, you won't regret it.

The remaining flood waters are not in the tourist-related areas, so now is a good time to visit Thailand: prices are low and the weather is mild. True, many are deeply affected emotionally and financially by the floods around their homes-but tourists are very much needed here to help the ailing economy.

We've been planning a trip for MONTHS and I just couldn't cancel! We'll be in Bangkok on the 22nd. Are the major Wats still in good enough shape? I'm glad to know it's not so bad there! :)
      • James 5 mths ago
        Major wats are ok
    • Mekhong Kurt  •  5 mths ago
Ms. James, as an American long resident -- 17 years-plus -- in central Bangkok, I feel that as bad as things have been, your piece is somewhat alarmist in two aspects.

In the first place, the Ministry of Tourism report said IF the floods continued through December -- but it hasn't rained in about three weeks now. Yes, there are still major swaths of Greater Bangkok still suffering with filthy flood waters, but they *are* draining -- thank goodness. (By the way, I'm truly sorry for your boyfriend; several of my own friends' homes have suffered similar fates.)

Secondly, regarding the terrible 2004 tsunami -- I didn't lose any friends, but a few of my friends, both Thai and foreign, did -- every creditable estimate of the (confirmed) fatalities falls in the 5,000-6,000 range, not over 10,000. Even estimated deaths, a number which includes confirmed deaths, have variously been estimated to be somewhere between 8,000 and 9,000. Those figures are horrendous enough without inflating them, Ma'am.

You are right that Thailand generally and its tourism industry sure have suffered far more than its fair share of major body blows, as you detail in your article. I'm almost wondering if another collapse of the baht, as happened in 1997, might actually be a *good* thing, in some ways -- though I hasten to add that the collapse also caused great hardship for a great many people, including some of my friends, especially those with foreign currency-denominated debts but baht incomes.

“And, with every bullet fired, there went Thailand's tourist industry. Again.” And all the red shirts squatting Ratchaprsong and Lumpini brought in so many tourists as did the burning and looting of Bangkok. I was on Silom when the red shirt “men in black” shot grenades to the skytrain station. Red shirts believe in democracy as long as it’s their democracy.

No shortage of tourists here in Jomtien, the 7-11 stores can't keep cheap beer in stock.

Thailand was a nice place ten years ago but not anymore. each year something. tsunami. coup d'etat. street fights - coup d'etat. - election and mob - coup d'etat. flood, and then what's next I have an idea bu t won't tell.

i have several friends sleeping at temples because of the flooding. tourism is not the issue here. rather it's about how those affected (thousands upon thousands) can recover some semblance of their lives. the gov't can't control nature but they can do something about how to deal with this and i hope the corruption of gov't officials will take a back seat in the recovery. unfortunately the common thai will most likely become victims again. not from flooding but from their fellow thais.
