Thailand tallies rising cost of nationwide floods

BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand is counting the multibillion dollar cost of nationwide flooding that has killed nearly 270 people and may yet cause more havoc as waters threaten to engulf the country's capital.

Bank of Thailand Governor Prasarn Trairatvorakul said a preliminary estimate by the central bank shows economic losses from flooding that began in late July range from baht 60 billion to baht 80 billion ($1.9 billion to $2.6 billion).

That figure doesn't include damages to assets or reconstruction costs and is expected to rise as the flood waters surge toward Bangkok, a city of about 10 million people. Some of its outlying areas are already under water.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and Bangkok officials pleaded Tuesday with the city's residents not to panic as workers raced to complete three critical flood walls with only one or two days to go before the already swollen river that winds through the capital bursts its banks.

Supermarket shelves have been cleared by shoppers of basic items such as rice, bottled water, pork and chicken. Flood damage to agricultural land in the country's north is expected to push up food prices, rice in particular.

The disaster is a further blow to Thailand's electronics and auto industries, which have only just recovered from the production disruptions caused by the March 11 tsunami in Japan that knocked out suppliers of critical components. A dive in Thailand's auto production caused the economy to shrink in the second quarter.

The flooding is the worst to hit the Southeast Asian nation in decades. About 8.2 million people in 60 of Thailand's 77 provinces have been affected by floods and mudslides, and 30 provinces are currently inundated. Prolonged monsoon flooding, typhoons and storms have killed hundreds of people across Southeast Asia, China, Japan and South Asia in the last four months.

Moody's Analytics economist Fred Gibson said economic losses from the flooding could swell if it spreads to the eastern seaboard province of Rayong where two thirds of Thai industry is located.

Honda Motor Co. said its Thai vehicle production has been suspended after two industrial estates in the historic capital of Ayutthaya, north of Bangkok, were inundated. Local media reported that hundreds of new Honda cars were submerged.

Damage to the Saharattananakorn industrial zone in Ayutthaya was estimated by the central bank at baht 25 billion to baht 30 billion.

Officials at the Agriculture Ministry said 2.9 million acres (1.17 million hectares) of rice fields might be damaged. Thailand, the world's biggest rice exporter, has about 27 million acres planted with the staple grain.

Another 700,000 acres of land planted with other crops is also likely to have suffered damage, the ministry said.

My prayers go out to the people of Thailand. I love Thailand and its people and have been there many times.
As per: the usual, their politicians have let the people down in preparing for this crisis.
Yingluck is a puppet of her older brother, Thaksin and is clueless like all politicians.
NEVER count on the gov'ts to baiul the people out. It didnt happen in here and it wont happen there.

Read in the New York Times today that much of the recent flooding in Thailand has been intensified by multiple new dams and river engineering schemes there, which have completely disrupted the ability of rain/flood waters to drain quickly back out to the sea during the monsoon season. The dams cause the floodwater to back up for many miles BEHIND the dams, flooding towns and villages. When the dams fill the water is suddenly released creating tsunamis of floodwaters to descend on downstream towns and cities like Bankok. Southeast Asia has seen a massive increase in dam building in the last 10-15 years by China and other nations. These dams are enormous structures and are some of the largest dams ever built on earth. Most of Southeast Asia's rivers were pristine and relatively DAM FREE until about 20 years ago. Much of the hydro-electricity from these dams is shipped back to China via electrical transmission lines, also built by China. Most Thai citizens and the citizens of these other nations, in Southeast Asia, have no knowledge of these dams because they're often built in remote upstream jungle areas and receive little press when they're built, completed and they're reservoirs filled. China likes it like this.....less press....less controversy/protest. The dams also increase river stagnation downstream from the dams and reduces river water flows.....warming and stagnating downstream river water. This kills river fish which need cold fast-running river water to breed, feed and live. The warm dam-stagnated river water also creates perfect habitat for malarial mosquitos. River fish are one of the main sources of protein for millions of Southeast Asians. Much of southeast Asian culture has always revolved around river fishing....for thousands of years. Been on the Chao Phraya river many times and flooding will continue to be a problem especially with their failed bureaucracy currently in power.
