Thatcher movie opens in Argentina to tough reviews

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Meryl Streep may have been nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady," but Argentine critics panned the film during its premiere in Buenos Aires on Thursday.

The film opened in Argentine theaters amid a furor over the Falkland Islands, which Thatcher's Britain and Argentina fought a brief war 30 years ago. In the movie, Thatcher is shown ordering Britain's military to sink the Argentine warship Belgrano, which killed 323 sailors and remains controversial because the ship was considered to be outside the war zone.

She also dismisses the entreaties of the American ambassador to settle the dispute peacefully, suggesting that as a woman, she's had to "go to war every day" to maintain her hold on power.

Reducing the decision to wage war to a question of feminism "is absurd, to say the least," the newspaper Clarin wrote in Thursday's review.

Others praised Streep's acting, but panned the script as mediocre.

"A character so controversial for her own citizens, the citizens of the world and especially for Argentines, Thatcher deserves a better movie," huffed La Nacion.

Buenos Aires and London have escalated a war of words ahead of the anniversary of the Argentine dictatorship's ill-fated invasion of the islands on April 2, 1982. More than 900 soldiers and sailors were killed on both sides by the time Britain seized them back.

The movie tries to humanize Thatcher, but "it didn't fool me," said Mario Huguet, 75, a psychoanalyst who called her a word unfit for publication after seeing the premiere. "It presents her as a senile grandmother, but the Argentine dictators also got to be old and pitiful."

Huguet's wife, Nora, also 75 and retired, said they saw the movie because she loves Streep. "She's wonderful. But it didn't change my opinion of Thatcher."

Britain has sent one of its most advanced warships, the HMS Dauntless, to the islands, as well as Prince William, a Royal Air Force helicopter pilot, ahead of the anniversary.

Argentine Vice President Amado Boudou said Thursday that Britain has falsely accused his South American country of threatening another invasion in order to distract Britons from their economic worries.

Argentina coveted and accepted hundreds of SS Nazis after WWII who were fleeing prosecution for war crimes.

Not every country. But, were that true, it doesn't make it right or morale. And the U.S. was just as wrong and immoral.

Politics aside, Streep was amazing...but the movie was very, very weak.

If she was "amazing" it would be the first time in her miserable career.

Argentina used to be the third richest country in the world after England and the United States. But then it turned to socialism and destroyed their private sector. It doesn't make the top 20 in the list of richest nations anymore.

Margaret Thatcher kicked Agentina's rear and tossed them out of the Falklands. The people who live in the Falklands are British and don't want to belong to Argentina. The Falklands are 300 miles from Argentina and you would think they would be left alone, but now that Britain no longer has a blue water navy, Argentna is talking about invading again.

No, Argentia did not turn to socialism. They turned to facism, joining corporate and government power.

Argentina was settled by Spain during the early 1500's, years before the creation of the Spanish Armada (Great and Most Fortunate Navy). Looks like it did exist back then, Scooter.

Once again it's teaching time for ignorants. Argentina is primarily a European (white ) country basically run by people of Italian and German ancestry who fled Europe. Native Americans ( Indigenous ) people were murdered and driven from the rich fertile valleys by immigrants of English, German, Italian and Spanish ancestry. Remember Spain is IN Europe you know next door to France and close to England. Do I have to freakin educate everyone. Didn't you go to $%^&^%#$ school?

Unlike Americans, the Argentinians are smart enough to know a bad, overrated actress when they see one.

"outside the war zone," huh? I guess the Argies forgot that they were the ones that invaded the Falklands in the first place. Who voted to establish and define the "war zone" there?

Argentina started the war, and Great Britian ended it. Losers always complain when they've had their butts kicked. Now they can return their third world, socialist poverty and cry like big babies. LOSERS!

Imagine Argentina claiming an island just off the coast of England. I'm no big fan of Argentina but c'mon get real. Look at a freakin map before you open your hole with nonsense.Britain won their previous war with secret help from guess who and the best war technology available. Argentina man up if you want your islands back.
