The Brave Puppy Named Norbert Who Was Dumped On A Motorway In A Cardboard Box

A puppy called Norbert has been given a new lease of life after being dumped in a cardboard box on the side of a motorway.

The seven-week-old lurcher was left by his owners near junction 9 of the M40 in Bicester, Oxfordshire on a stretch of the hard shoulder.

Fortunately, a motorist saw what had happened and pulled over to investigate, finding the dog shivering inside the box on a bed of wood chips with a pink toy.

The motorist took the dog to Hart Vets in Bicester, where he has been nursed back to health with antibiotics.

Surgeon Rosie Upton said: “When the puppy turned up he was clearly very underweight, grubby and had a horrible chest infection so he had very bad breathing.

“Since he turned up he has had an IV drip and been on antibiotics.

“I think he is doing well and gaining weight, but the question now is why is he still so underweight.

“At the moment he can be quite loud if he wants to be.

“Seeing him feeling a bit better I think he will be quite a naughty puppy but nothing that could not be improved on.”

The dog was called Norbert by veterinary staff because of a resemblance to the dragon of the same name from the Harry Potter movies.

When he has made a full recovery, a new home will be found for him.

Practice manager Kate Mathis said: “We deal with abandonment on a regular basis.

“We are all obviously animal lovers and it just makes me sick to the pit of my stomach.

“It is mortifying how anyone can do that sort of thing to any animal - not just puppies like Norbert - but any animal young, old, big or small.”
