The weirdest beauty products we saw in 2015

I am enamored as well as annoyed by weird beauty products. Every time I see something a little wacky, I automatically roll my eyes and think, "What are they going to try to sell me next?".  But, I also find myself thinking, "What if this is actually a breakthrough product and I'm being judgmental and snobby?". It's a weird juxtaposition of feeling both repelled and drawn in by a product claiming to be youth in a bottle. So, with an open mind and a little skepticism, I give you my current list of wonderfully weird beauty products.

Fullips Lip Enhancer

It's no secret that whatever Kylie Jenner has done to her lips has resonated with our great nation, hence the trending hashtag on Instagram earlier this year: #kyliejennerlipchallenge. If you happened to stumble upon any of the 200k horrifying images from the Instagram challenge, you are fully aware of what can happen to your lips when you use a device like the Fullips Lip Enhancer (or a shot glass). Not a good look.

Goody Quikstyle Paddle Wet Hair Brush

Goody QuikStyle Paddle Brush

When I saw this brush in my local drugstore, I laughed out loud. It's a strange hairbrush/towel/chamois hybrid, and I thought it looked like a movie prop from Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

After reading the reviews, I have to admit, I want it! People claim this brush decreases their hair drying time immensely and adds shine and volume. Next time I see the Goody QuickStyle in the hair care aisle, I'm going to buy it and try it out. I'll keep you updated via my Instagram

Aesop Post-Poo Drops

Aesop Post-Poo Drops

Aesop is an Australian brand of "old world fancy" body and skincare products. Among the collection of apothecary-like bottles I was surprised to find "Post-Poo Drops" for the retail price of $29.

This aromatic bathroom deodorizer is designed to combat the malodorous and leave behind a delicate scent of citrus and floral. $29 is steep for a glorified bathroom spray, but this lovely bottle is so much more aesthetically pleasing than a yellow can of Lysol.

Vaseline Crystal Encrusted Lip Balm

Vaseline Crystal Encrusted Lip Balm

I love fancy packaging, but I find this crystal-encrusted Vaseline Creme Brulee lip balm to be ridiculous. This product retails for $45 and the only thing that differentiates it from the original Vaseline lip balm is the bling and maybe the decadent dessert flavoring.

Younique 3D Fiber Lash Mascara
Younique 3D Fiber Lash Mascara

Younique 3D Fiber Lash Mascara

When will this obsession with gigantic doll lashes cease? Between huge falsies, prescription lash growth serums and extensions, we are all lucky to have any eyelashes left!

Younique isn't the only brand that carries this weird two-step fiber mascara product, but it's the one I tried. First you apply what feels like a basic mascara, and then you follow it with these insanely heavy cotton-like fibers that are wrapped around a wand. The idea is that the fibers stick to the first product you applied and create hair-like lashes that extend longer than any natural lash could. Wrong. The fibers get in your eyes, clump up, and end up all over your face. Not good.

e.l.f. Cosmetics Mascara Shadow Shield

e.l.f. Studio Mascara and Shadow Shield

Sometimes when I use mascara, I will accidentally smudge it under my lower lash line and across the bridge of my nose. I might even get a dollop of black goop up near my eyebrow. It's annoying but I have come to accept that my brain simply cannot concentrate on not stabbing myself in the eye with a mascara wand, seperarting/lengthening/thickening my lashes while also making sure I am not bonking the brush into various other facial features.

You might think that the e.l.f. mascara and shadow shield is the ideal tool for me to prevent this from happening, but I think it would be just another tool that sits unused in my acrylic makeup brush organizer. When a smudge happens I simply wait for a few moments for the offending mascara dots to dry and then gently chip it off my face. It works perfectly.

Holika Holika Pig-Collagen Jelly Pack

Holika Holika Pig Collagen Jelly Pack

Vegans and vegetarians can go ahead and skip over this one. Holicka Holicka's Pig Collagen Jelly Pack Sleeping Cream contains 70,000 mg of pig skin collagen. The pig collagen is believed to moisturize, firm, and smooth the skin while you sleep. How could you even begin to slather this cream on your face while that adorable little pig illustration is smiling at you?

Another offering from the Korean brand Holicka Holicka are these adorable little wine barrel sleeping masks. The red wine mask contains anti-wrinkling ingredients that improve skins smoothness while the white wine mask is used to brighten the skin. I had no idea I've been using my nightly red wine routine all wrong!

The Hapifork
The Hapifork

The Hapifork

This product was featured at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show, but this is the first time I have seen it for retail sale. This "Smart Fork" helps you track and monitor your eating habits and eating speed. The Hapifork measure how long it took you to eat your meal, how many fork servings you ate and how long you waited in between bites. All of the info that your fork gathers can be inputed into an app that tracks your habits. I'm sorry, but there are already too many gadgets and apps telling me how to live my life. They report how many steps I take, how much food I eat, how many people like me - I just can't take it anymore.
