Theater for the New City, a prize-winning non-profit cultural center that has served the arts and the residents of New York City for 40 years, has launched a fundraising campaign at Kickstarter.com as part of its annual fundraiser, which is a benefit called Love ‘n’ Courage, a name that captures the theater’s can-do spirit. Readers are urged to donate.

The theater hopes the Kickstarter.com campaign will help it raise funds to meet the costs of conducting its many laudable activities, which include developing new theatrical works, nurturing emerging playwrights, conducting after-school arts-in-education initiatives for middle and high school students, offering a free ticket program for senior citizens and others, hosting the free Lower East Side Festival, staging a Summer Street Theater Tour, and providing numerous other community outreach services.
Readers are urged to log onto Kickstarter.com, enter Theater for The New City in the search bar, and donate. Donations large and small are accepted. The fundraising goal of the Kickstarter program is $1,000 to $5,000.
Donors at Kickstarter are eligible for rewards, including free tickets to TNC productions, mention of contributors in TNC playbills, e-vites to upcoming presentations, tours of the theater, along with personal meetings and consultations with the theater's creative, technical and administrative staff.
The main event of the fundraiser, an evening at The National Arts Club, is a celebration of the theater’s devotion to serving the arts and the public. It’s an evening of song, dance and the spoken word. This year Tammy Grimes will head the list of performers.
The evening will include a celebration of the life and legendary career of Bel Kaufman, teacher and author of the bestselling novel "Up the Down Staircase," which was based on her teaching experiences. She turned 100 last May – and currently teaches at Hunter College.
Tickets to the Love ‘n’ Courage event are available now and can be purchased by calling the theater at 212-254-1109 or by visiting http://www.theaterforthenewcity.net. It’s scheduled for the evening of February 13th. The room seats about 200 guests, and tickets cost $135 each. The Love ‘n’ Courage celebration consists of cocktails at 6:30pm, dinner at 7:00pm, and performances at 8:00pm.

Theater for the New City is a Pulitzer Prize-winning theater. Past productions have garnered 43 Obie Awards.
The theater is known for its high artistic standards and community service. One of New York’s most prolific theatrical organizations, TNC produces 30-40 premieres of new American plays and musicals per year, at least 10 of which are by emerging and young playwrights. Theater for the New City has an open-door policy toward new work, considering plays of any style, genre and political persuasion – and reading every script submitted. The company also commissions and produces plays by better-known American playwrights, who have included Sam Shepard, Maria Irene Fornes, Matt Morillo, Eduardo Machado and Charles Busch.
Theater for the New City is located at 155 First Avenue in the East Village, where it remains one of the few remaining outposts for experimental and political theater in 21st century New York.
