    Dr. Bonnie Eaker Weil, PhD, relationship therapist announces new trend of sexting, online flirting, hall passes, and cheating is a growing trend for committed couples, and is replacing divorce. “According to a recent online study conducted by a dating website promoting cheaters about sexting and infidelity in cyberspace, sexting is on the rise with both genders. The divorce rate is declining. This trend says that couples are lowering their expectations and standards for their relationships. Instead of deciding whether to go or stay, the question now seems to be whether to go or stray,” Dr. Bonnie reveals.

    “There are many factors going on here, and after analyzing the data, the blame doesn’t completely fall on the Internet and cell phones. Add a declining economy, lost jobs, a housing market slump, and the convenience of shopping for sex online, a perfect storm of opportunity arises for those wanting an extra-marital kick without the financial ruin a divorce can cause,” Dr. Bonnie explains.

    In the author’s NY Times Reader’s Choice award winning book, Make Up Don’t Break Up with accompanying DVD Falling in Love and Staying in Love, Dr. Bonnie explains how deceptive behavior in a relationship is a slippery slope. “I doubt if couples are discussing their peep and show activities over the dinner table. First couples hide their behavior, then the behavior escalates, and before they know it, they have a real problem. I’m not sure what Rep. Weiner’s sexting and ensuing job loss people don’t understand. No one lives in a vacuum, especially with information captured on phones and online,” Dr. Bonnie says.    

    “To be clear, the online study was conducted using data from adult visitors to the website AshleyMadison.com, a service promoting infidelity. The sample came from a pool of people with a proclivity for cheating, or at least thinking about it. Nevertheless, adding the increase of lawyers reporting their divorcing clients had relationship interference from old and new acquaintances online, the report has validity in highlighting the disturbing trend that more opportunity and easier access can lead to adulterous behavior,” Dr. Bonnie warns.
