There's a Need to Get More Women into Careers in Manual Labor

COMMENTARY | According to Time.com, women are underrepresented in media and journalism. Since 1998 the percentages of women working in the fields of media and journalism have remained stagnant or declined. Obviously, people are concerned.

I agree the genders should be equally represented in the media and journalism. But why do we only seem to complain about gender statistics when it comes to positions of publicity and prestige? Where is the outrage over the lack of men in elementary education? When many children lack positive male role models, why does society reflect indifference or even pay heed to negative stereotypes when it comes to men working in elementary education and child care?

If we want to increase gender equality, we should focus on increasing gender diversity at more basic levels. Focusing on having more women fighter pilots, firefighters, college professors and media professionals is good but does little to alter the day-to-day perpetuation of gender stereotypes among the middle and working classes. Having more women pursue careers in sanitation, construction, manufacturing and heavy industry would prove to skeptics in society that women truly belong in all sectors of employment.

According to the Occupational Safety & Health Administration, women are in the distinct minority in construction and similar careers. By denying women a voice in manual labor we continue to accept the dual myth of "man's work" and "woman's work."

By raising eyebrows at male nurses, elementary school teachers and librarians, we maintain a monolithic definition of masculinity. By contrast, with society's focus on gender diversification only in more prestigious and glamorous careers, we are not allowing the expectations of femininity to become less rigid.

The funny thing about these women's groups wanting more representation in the media industry is that the women in media seem to perpetuate the "woman" stereotype: slim, buxom, and mostly blond in short skirts even when slacks may be more appropriate.

Article written by a man who probably never did any manual work.

Sorry to bust your bubble but I have worn a hard hat, drove trucks delivering steel, construction but decided that an education was the ticket.

        Manual labor is soooo glamorous.

Must have been written by someone who never did any manual work. Right Calvin?

Unfortunately for men, they are viewed with suspicion when they work with children (which is not right) and that is why I think they are underrepresented in areas such as elementary education.

It's called common sense and mothers are called mothers for a reason. Obviously, there are more than a few "mothers" in the Obama Administration who are pushing this stupid policy.

This may be a strategy to drive wages even lower.

Seriously? I work in a office for a contractor. Our guys (yes, they are all guys) haul around 80 lb bags of concrete and 100 lb bags of rocks. Most women are simply not physically able to do the work, and that's fine. Any woman who can, I say great! Have at it. At my best, I could never have done the work these guys do.

I totally agree. I have a female friend in construction that does roofs, to siding to painting. She enjoys her job, but not happy at the company she is at, at the present moment. But with construction being slow that doesn't help. I know I can't physically do that job, and I know my limits. I can help with the random house project and move around some 2x4's and other random things, but not on an everyday basis. Some women can, and some can't. Do what you like, no matter what society says.

I'm glad to see more female auto mechanics.

Construction jobs do pay way better than pink collar jobs that many women take. But you have to be physically strong and not afraid to get dirty to work. Women are not encouraged to build muscles or get dirty or be strong. They're trained by society to diet, have a slim body, and go to the salon. BTW, I love male nurses. All the ones I encountered were cute and nice :)

Women aren't stupid enough to fall for this kind of low paid dangerous work.
    • Blondee  •  3 mths ago
I think women are more than capable of hold physically strenuous jobs. But they have to have the mental capability to do so. Same goes for men who choose to teach or other typically female roles. Remember way back when during WWII when the men went off to fight the war...it was women to went into the factories to make the supplies for the war? We did it then, we can do it now.

I just wish that people could admit that men and women are better at some things than others and are suited for some things more than others. They're equal but different, and each's strengths and weaknesses complement the other's. It's nature and it should be a thing of beauty.

What do they think cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, doing laundry, etc. is? Women already do lots of manual labor, they just don't get a paycheck for it. Gees. Maybe they prefer something different than that for a career choice.
      • N A 3 mths ago
You are so right! Manual labor is the last thing I want to do since I have to do that at home everyday.
      • BobtheB 3 mths ago
I would not consider doing laundry the same as heavy industry. A lot of guys get maimed and killed in heavy industry. Never heard that happen doing laundry.
      • DL 3 mths ago
Ah BobtheB, you're right, but I still think being buried under reams of dirty diapers really qualifies for heavy and dirty industry.

The next generation will be able to see this more. I'm a 90's kid and wasn't allowed into auto shop, they stuck me in childcare instead, like changing a diaper, playing with a baby, or singing a child to sleep is hard. I had to settle for aerospace science when autoshop filled. I know the mechanics of flight, but have no interest in the Air Force. Go Army.

Giving the writer the benifit of the doubt, I am assuming this article is intended to be satire.

I know women who have tried to work in construction and plumbing. The constant sexual harrassment drove them away from fields they were passionate about. No one in law enforcement gave a #$%$ They were all told to find something more appropriate for a girl. There is huge inequality out there. The author is dead on about male nurses and elementary teachers. Our society is horribly confused about gender.

... and keep them there? manual labor is looked down upon that's why it's poorly paid and the workers are ill treated...our civilizations are built upon enslavement one way or another.

When did demographics become manditory in job hiring?
    • smojo  •  3 mths ago
I agree. Women could have all kinds of fun in construction. And children NEED male teachers. But men stereotypically seek higher paying jobs as they are stereotypically viewed as being the breadwinners and don't want to be at the bottom of the totem pole salary wise for a professional job. Keep in mind that teachers spend the same amount of money on a college education as an engineer, but can be guaranteed to make the same amount of money as say an entry level accountant for the REST of their lives. Meanwhile the entire country scrutinizes ever move teachers make..... but no one wants to pay a teacher like an engineer but expects a teacher to work like Ghandi. Typically men want to be paid respect in their salaries, treated like they're worth, etc. Women tend to be more altruistic and not see themselves as the breadwinners and are "okay" with the lower salaries, because women, who are always apologizing for themselves, probably believe every news article they read about teachers that we are just never good enough despite all of our hard work......

I work with contract labor on a regular basis with female laborers, boilermakers, pipefitters, electricians, even ironworkers. The quality and productivity of the females are as acceptable as the males. I don't have a problem with it at all. When you talk to any of them why they went into the construction trades, the answer is pretty much the same; they just decided to do what it took to get into it. They didn't sit back and whine about why they couldn't, they just did it.

Sorry, but if I were a man I would not want to be standing next to a women with a jackhammer. And I'm not interested in my daughters having male teachers in elementary school. We are DIFFERENT people...get over it.
