The third most torrented TV show isn’t even on cable
Everyone knows that Game of Thrones is once again the most torrented TV show of the year, but could you name the top ten? Peer-to-peer analyst group Tru Optik has compiled a list of the top ten TV show torrents from the second quarter of 2014, and although a majority are predictable, number 3 stands out above the rest. With 60.8 million torrent download, the Netflix original prison dramedy Orange is the New Black has become the third most popular TV show torrent…and it isn’t even on TV.
Only Game of Thrones and The Big Bang Theory managed to top Orange is the New Black, a show which beat out Mad Men, How I Met Your Mother and the return of Jack Bauer in 24. Netflix has gone on record time and time again to express their elation over the success of Jenji Kohan’s show. We’re starting to see the proof on P2P networks.
Tru Optik has also broken down the torrent data by network. In this category, Netflix comes in tenth behind HBO, Showtime, AMC and every major network, but interestingly, the total torrent downloads of Netflix shows comes out to 62.6 million. If this data is accurate, that means that less than 2 million people downloaded any Netflix originals other than Orange is the New Black for an entire quarter. If I were a betting man, I’d put my money on House of Cards.
