Thousands in Maine remain without power in midst of ice storm

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) -- Thousands of Maine electric customers remain without power as an ice storm continues to put the state in a deep freeze.

The National Weather Service has issued an ice storm warning in much of the state through noon Monday with fog and freezing drizzle making driving hazardous.

Bangor Hydro reported nearly 7,000 customers without power on Monday morning, with Hancock and Washington counties the hardest hit. The utility is blaming icing on power lines and tree limbs, but is diverting crews from less affected areas to get the power back on as soon as possible.

Central Maine Power Co. is reporting fewer than 500 outages as of Monday morning, with most in the Kennebec County towns of Litchfield and Pittston.
