Three Ways that Samsung is Copying Apple

This story comes from the Yahoo! Contributor Network, where individuals publish their unique perspectives on some of the world’s most popular websites.
Do you have a story to tell? Become a Yahoo! contributor

Apple's patent lawsuit against Samsung has been widely publicized ... as have the late Steve Jobs' personal animosity towards Android, and Apple's stated requirements for a tablet which does not infringe on its patents.

But whatever your take on the battle of Apple versus the world's largest Android device maker, tech pundits and Reddit commenters alike have noticed some striking similarities between Samsung and Apple ... both in the products themselves, and in the ways they're presented to people.

    Product packaging

The crux of the Apple lawsuit is that Samsung's latest Android tablet, the 10-inch Galaxy Tab, is alleged to be too similar to Apple's iPad. As Reddit commenter MarsSpaceship humorously pointed out, however, the similarities didn't start there.

The old 7-inch Galaxy Tab may not have been easy to mistake for an iPad, since it was half the size and had more buttons, but its packaging drew some obvious inspiration from Apple's. And as the pictures show, not only are many Samsung peripherals and accessories nearly identical to Apple's, but the Samsung booth (at an unspecified trade show or retail location) actually used Apple's app icons in its display.

    Product design

The similarities between Samsung and Apple's products are both internal and external. As John Brownlee of the ironically-named "Cult of Mac" noted, Samsung's new entry-level Galaxy Ace phone bears a striking resemblance to Apple's four-year-old iPhone 3G. Many of Samsung's other smartphones have a similar aesthetic, complete with a single home button like Apple's.

Internally, Samsung apps (like the voice recorder shown in the picture on Reddit) sometimes closely resemble their Apple counterparts. Its TouchWiz interface bears a certain resemblance as well, as shown in the pictures on Ina Fried's article for All Things D, although part of this is because Android's home screens bear a strong resemblance to iOS'.

    Advertising

A recent Samsung advertisement (which was aired in Korea) for the Galaxy Tab not only mimicked the style of Apple's ads, it used the same child actress who appeared in an iPhone 4S commercial, as Google+ user Cheryl Lindo Jones discovered.

Samsung has pulled the ad from its YouTube page, but has not given any reason why. It also hasn't pulled other ads that it's run in North America, which mock iPhone owners by calling their gadgets "old school." Other ads depict Apple fans waiting in line to buy an iPhone, and show Samsung Galaxy S II owners making fun of them.

Let me get this straight: If the majority of consumers prefer a specific style -- NOBODY else except the first company is ever allowed to make one?

When I was young, all stereo components were "silver" aluminum. Then, a few years later, all are black. Isn't that "copying"?

Don't all flat-panel TV's look virtually the same? Big screen, as thin a bezel as possible, hidden speakers, buttons maybe on the side?

      Same goes with computer monitors.

All companies want to make things whose designs people LIKE. Apple does not own that. All it means is that Samsung (and others) *also* know people like clean-looking (few buttons) devices.

My Samsung Galaxy Nexus has *zero* buttons on the front. Apple has one. If they ever get rid of that button, then THEY are copying Samsung!

Aww the people that copy others are crying when they get copied. Oh the irony...

This article screams Apple bias IMHO.. Everything in today's society is built on other things.. Originality is pretty much impossible & all these vague patents are further stifling creativity and innovation.

Steve Jobs was quoted as saying "Good artists copy; great artists steal". Where as Samsung is simply copying in this instance (if you can even call it that).. Apple has on many occasions stolen (examples are the Apple name from Apple Records, the original iPod interface from Creative Labs, refusing to pay Nokia for 3g patents till years later after they lost a law suit)

When Jobs accused Gates of stealing the GUI. Gates replied: "No, Steve, I think its more like we both have a rich neighbor named Xerox, and you broke in to steal the TV set, and you found out I'd been there first, and you said. "Hey that's no fair! I wanted to steal the TV set!"

Agreed. So they both a home button in the same place, so what? I have a Ford tuck and a Dodge Caravan. The ignition is in the same place on both. As is the seat, steering wheel and engine. The hood opens the same way on each and the fuel filler is on the driver's side on each. Did one copy the other? No, these are just the logical places for these items to be. Not every piece of something used by humans can be moved around to satisfy a patent.

Probably apple wants that samsung place the buttons at the back of the tablet,or resize the screen and make the samsung look more ugly.So to force people into buying ipad which cost you more.If apple makes autos they might sue everyone with similar features and force others to have the driver in the middle,or the driver behind the passengers and since their cars move forward it will force others to move backwards or side wards.Come on apple is this one of the others ways you make money?I agree with you Gettorix.
      • Hi 4 mths ago
We Koreans don't spend a millions dollars on research and development, we just copy Japan, USA, etc., Samsung copied Sony Hyundai copied Honda even has same initial H. Why spend so much on R&D when we can just copy it. hehehehe
    • Edward M  •  4 mths ago
Apple just want Samsung and other competitors to look ugly and force everyone to buy their expensive products. And as another of the ways to get money"sue".Like cars or autos almost all have similar features but they never sue each other.Good thing apple doesn't make cars or else they'll sue them and force them to make cars driver side in the middle, run backwards or sideways.Apple wake up! this is a competitive world where products get better due to competition, they may look similar but will be better than the others and its your move to make it better, show them what you can do-better.

Click on the Author's name and read some of his other articles. This guy has no clue what he's talking about, but that doesn't seem to stop him from writing crap like this.

Apple... Stop crying over spilled milk. Just build a better product then Samsung and see who sells more..

Bonebreaker, they already do build a better product "than" Samsung. And they ARE selling more of them.
    • Clayton  •  Dothan, Alabama  •  4 mths ago
How come we never see articles about how Apple copies others? The ipad looks ALOT like old MS tablets afterall...
      • Saint 4 mths ago
Or how the new iOS 5 has features strangely similar to Android? Hmmmm...
    • Eugene  •  4 mths ago
Oh, yeah, like Apple never stole anything off of anyone else.

Star Trek had the idea of the PADD long before there was an iPad.
      • Skeptical Believer 4 mths ago
Eugene, seriously?!? Star Trek? That's the fantasy world. Apple brought it to reality. And yes, even Steve Jobs said they steal ideas (and make them better), but Samsung has to blatantly copy almost everything from Apple in order to sell their product? Please!
      • Eugene 4 mths ago
So Apple never copied Palm, Nokia, Microsoft, etc.?

Apple doesn't make things better, they use the same hardware and package it with a non free form of UNIX, then they charge much more for a crappy 13 inch laptop, when their competetors can sell you a better 17 inch one for much less.
      • anant_ 4 mths ago
Well, a 13 inch will almost always be pricier than a 17 inch equivalent bcoz its lighter and that's a premium consumers are ready to pay for an 'easy-to'carry', less bulky laptop. So IMHO, we cannot use this as a supporting example.

There's only so many ways you can design a tablet and smartphone.
Samsung having Apple apps in their showcase? What, You know Samsung doesn't make the apps.
You can't blame them for the UI, Android and iphone almost has the same kind of UI anyway.
On the Galaxy, it has 4 buttons on the bottom, whereas ipad only has one.

Apple copied everyone else anyway. Back when they introduced the iphone, their was already a voip phone out they using the name iphone. So Apple stole the name.
Android had voice control assist before the iphone.
      Apple copied Android notifications.
Apple copy's alot from other people also.
      • JohnW 4 mths ago
Android was designed to compete with the Blackberry and was meant to be used with a keyboard. When they iPhone came out Google copied Apples touch screen aproach.
      • breweyez 4 mths ago
and apple copied it from someone else
      • John M 4 mths ago
@johnw, You know that their were touchscreen phones before iphone, right.
And who says Android was first built to be used with a keyboard?
    • Eugene  •  4 mths ago
And wasn't there Windows XP tablets before the iPad?
    • Richard  •  Boynton Beach, Florida  •  4 mths ago
Thirty years of fraudulent proprietary technology while the rest of the universe clones, Apple should grow up and accept reality—IBM was sportsmanlike— so lighten up, Apple.
    • Dan  •  4 mths ago
Every smartphone company makes a phone that has four buttons. Do you see them calling each other copycat and having hissy fits? No, that is the specialty of Apple fanboys like this writer. Samsung makes a phone that has one button like the iphone, and its their cheapest phone. Wow, a real win for you there Apple.

And showing a booth that is of unknown origin and blaming the company Samsung for it? This article reeks of desperation.
    • Dan  •  4 mths ago
Apple used photoshoped resized images in court to make Samsung and Apple products look more similar. This is the kind of thing that they do. Out of like 40 different smartphone models that Samsung offers, this has one button like the iphone. Big deal. Every phone manufacturer right now has a model that has 4 buttons. Do you see them calling each other copycat crying foul? No, Apple fanboys just need the attention, they want everyone to think that they invented the touchphone.
    • breweyez  •  4 mths ago
Is the fool who wrote this article twelve? apple didnt come up with these ideas....they did what almost all companies do....they steal them from someone else

Does the Samsung product cause assemblers to jump out of windows at the factory as well?
    • Chuck  •  Los Angeles, California  •  4 mths ago
JHC, this is like saying Windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux "copy" OSX. The cold hard FACT is that Apple copied virtually everything in its operating systems and hardware from some other innovator. Steve Jobs talent was as a huckster - seeing something that had commercial appeal and monetizing it. Jobs was no innovator. As for android phones and tablets and the iPhone and iPad, the argument can just as easily be made that Apple copies from those devices - front and rear cameras, dual core processors, wifi tethering - those were all features of Android devices before Apple SLAVISHLY copied those features in the iPhone and the iPad.

The patents that Apple has relied on to contest Samsung and Android devices are mostly LAUGHABLE and are more indicative of a broken intellectual property system than of Apple protecting any substantive innovation. Seriously - its like if Ford sued GM for using the steering wheel or placing the brake pedal to the left of the acceleraor pedal. It's like GM suing Ford over the concept of seatbelts. It's like General Mills suing Post over the idea of brand flakes with raisins. It's like Scion suing Chevy because the Spark "slavishly copies" the iQ design.

The writer of this article has poopie for neurons.

If Samsung is copying Apple, they must be doing a great job since I've owned both products and Samsung is still going strong. I am never buying Apple again.

apple is not a US company, NO! they use the words AMERICAN PHONE maker to fool americans but it is actually made in communist china by the forced political prisoners. APPLE is a disgrace
