Tibetan monk who set himself on fire is cremated

BEIJING (AP) — A monk who set himself on fire in an ethnically Tibetan region of western China has been cremated.

The Free Tibet campaign in London says 29-year-old Tsewang Norbu died Monday after dousing himself with gasoline and setting himself on fire in Daofu county.

The official Xinhua News Agency says the monk's body was cremated Wednesday in accordance with Tibetan rituals. It says family members and monks attended his funeral.

It was the second reported self-immolation by a monk this year.

In March, a 21-year-old monk set himself on fire, also in Sichuan province, in an apparent protest against Chinese government rule over Tibet.

We don't like "Exile" Tibetans in Nepal. Their women are without modesty, their monks (Lamas) are fakes, they take drugs, drink alcohol and gamble. Ignorant foreign tourists buy their Made-in China trinkets and cower at their feet like doggies. Take these parasites back to your countries, feed them and let them live for free. We don't want them in Nepal!

Good insight from someone who knows.

when they can no longer get handouts in other countries, the will go back to China, and continue to be parasites in the name of religion.

this is one monk who won't reincarnate.

If the guy was on fire, might as well let him burn all crispy.

It's very offensive how people can criticize and believe that this was terrorism. This monk did a selfless act only harming himself. He did this for the freedom to be heard and if any of you who commented, I wish you first look into the history of Tibet and then judge. "Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care for people will hear them and be influenced by them for good or ill."-Buddha

        WELL SAID LISA.

Lisa, it's easier to understand some of the "people" here are Chinese 50 Centors from the 50 Cent Brigade. They're professionals paid 24/7/365 to post comments making China and the CCP look like angles instead of the actual evils and villains that they truly are.

Another terrorist who thinks self suicide is a noble cause. It is a shame that a buddhist monk ( i doubt he is a buddhist), if he is really one thinks that committing suicide for a political cause is noble, then he is no different then the muslims. Unlike the muslim, virgins will wait for them in heaven, however, the duped monk will face a cycle of reincarnation of misery.

Of course he is a monk and if you were in his place you would understand the horror these Tibets have gone through. Plus do not compare him, for he did not harm anyone but himself, unlike others who rather take others down with them. He was selfless sacrificing himself to be heard! he is brave.

A depressed monk sets fire to himself and was cremated? Not drowned? Who'd a thought? Oh, I see, the headline simply means that after cremating most of himself, what was left over was re-cremated to finish off the job, in honor of his last wishes that nothing even faintly human would remain to be buried. Makes sense I suppose....

What's the monk gonna do next ..burn in hell....I bet even in Tibet this monk ain't happy no mo.

I apologize. This is rude but the first thought that ran through my mind after reading this inane AP headline was, "Too late!"

this is tragic but americans really cant talk about what has has happened since china reclaimed its control of tibet. it is a tragedy of history. when two cultures bump and one has both superior technology and population pressures, bad things happen. i doubt that many tibetans would choose to leave china and move to an american indian reservation.
      • S 9 mths ago
having friends in an american indian reservation, i totally agree. Most people have little idea of what reality is. Media slant is not reality.

Had he drowned himself I guess they would have buried him at sea.

Well, the title of this article is a little redundant, isnt it? (Why do I find this hilarious?) "Drowned man is buried at sea...Man frozen to death is cryogenically preserved"...and so on and so forth...you get the picture. :)
