Tim Cook, Please Don't Call the iPhone 7 the iPhone SE

Well, that's one way to manage expectations. According to a new report, Apple may name its next phone the iPhone 6SE instead of the iPhone 7, in an effort to message to shoppers that this is not the huge update they're looking for but more of a medium-size upgrade.

The rumor was spotted by 9to5Mac on the German blog Apfelpage, which says that Chinese supply chain sources have seen packaging and labeling that show iPhone 6SE. Sure, there's already the iPhone SE, but iPhone 6SE is too many letters and numbers and almost sounds like a joke. How about the Not Quite iPhone 7? Or iPhone 6S Tweak?

The reasoning behind the report is that Apple is supposedly moving to a three-year product cycle for the iPhone line, as opposed to the two-year, tick-tock schedule the company has been following since the product's inception.

9to5Mac suggests that Apple could offer more elegant names without moving to iPhone 7, such as 6X or Pro. Practically anything would be better than iPhone 6SE.

Whatever it winds up being called, the next iPhone is expected to offer a faster processor, improved cameras (perhaps one model with dual lenses) and a thinner, water-resistant design that will likely lose the headphone jack.

It's easy to see why Apple might want to trumpet this sequel as the iPhone 7, as the 2017 version is expected to sport an all-new design with an OLED display, but iPhone 6SE just doesn't sound right.
