Tim Tebow Should Never Hold Public Office

COMMENTARY | Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow made headlines throughout the football season for athletic ability and his public religious behavior. Now, according to an interview on the Golf Channel, Tebow says he might enter politics. Interviewer David Feherty, said, "President Tim -- that's working for me."

This revelation brings to light one of the biggest problems in American politics today: People care more about what a candidate believes than whether he is qualified to hold public office.

Tebow was home-schooled until high school, according to the Washington Post. He graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in family, youth and community services, according to the Gainesville Sun. He was raised in a situation where he faced little traditional social interaction with large groups of peers. His degree is not in economics, constitutional law, medicine, engineering or finance.

In other words, he has little practical experience applicable to leading a nation. He's not an expert in the matters that make a modern economy or political body operate.

His devout religious observances could cause problems as well. Try to picture him at an important international function and periodically lapsing into his now-famous prayer pose. It would be less than presidential at best and could cause foreign-affairs issues at worst, particularly when dealing with theocratic nations.

That's the problem with the ultra-religious. They think they serve a boss higher than their duty to their civic office. And it's not just Tebow who has this problem. Actual candidates share it.

Why don't we as a nation demand of our leaders that they be smart, intelligent people? Why don't we require them to be trained in matters relevant to leading an enormous political body? Being able to hit a receiver in the numbers may help on the gridiron but it doesn't help run a country.

Tebow should stay out of politics -- as should anyone else believing their religion more important than their civic duty.

As opposed to the 'regular religious' who will compromise their beliefs for a dollar? Personally, I have a similar view: I like my political journalists to have a degree in Political Science or Journalism as opposed to your degree in IT. Strike one. I also would like them to be 'smart, intelligent' people. Strike two. Trained in matters relevant to their career? Strike three.

wow....i can't believe i just read this on a "reputable" website. i can totally see why you would be afraid that he would interrupt important meetings to "tebow". lets remember that its not him that made this pose a fad, but people like you who continue to talk about it. and just because one interviewer made a joke about him being president doesnt mean hes not qualified to be a mayor, or even a congressman....heaven knows it doesnt take much to do that

And just how did the writer get this job? wow

This is one of the most narrow minded articles I have ever ridden. This piece drips with arrogance. By the way, it is not necessarily a bad thing when an elected official believes he will be held accountable to a Higher Power regarding how he treats his constituency. Not all religiousness is bad and usually is very good. When they do not feel accountable that is when you get the "ends justify the means" mentality. There have been just as many athiest dictators as religious ones and they match atrocities as well. The question is what commandments does he feel compelled to follow. For Tebow it is clear- love thy neighbor.

So, Mister Riggio, the people of the United States should not elect someone with religious beliefs, a queer, a lesbian, a Muslim, a Mormon, a high-school dropout, a person who walked miles to give someone their change, someone who can not walk at all, a quadrapeligiac, an old soldier or a young one, a woman, etc, etc, etc.I submit to you, better them than any Congressman, any Mayor, any Governor any lawyer, any politician. Wasn't it Truman who said, "Of course you cannot trust politicians. They are all lawyers." And, now, you can not trust those who write commentary, because they are never objective, but self-serving. Mister Riggio, my objective observation is that you are a real #$%$

Wow, Andrew Riggio calm down. He said he "MIGHT" enter politics later in the future. "Might" being the keyword. You're sense of panic is overblown. Assuming he stays in the NFL until the age that most QBs retire, there's still about another 20 plus years until he may even seriously consider entering. It's not like he said he was joining the GOP ticket today. No need to get your panties in a bunch.

Funny how people who don't even know a guy pass judgement on mental acuity. And - no one goes from a football job to president of the U.S. That is just ridiculous. Anyone who would run for office with no "experience" would start small and work their way up. Just like someone doesn't just go from peewee leagues to the NFL without gaining experience. Your ignorance is showing...

The autor of this piece of trash is just that. Another anti-religious nut case from the far left.

This article from Andrew Riggio is a ridiculous piece of trash. One comment is made about Tebow being the President of the U.S. from someone on the Golf Channel, most likely made tongue-in-cheek, an Riggio goes off on an extreme tangent that Tim has his sights set on the White House right out of the gate. Hey Riggio, Tim said he might be interested in politics NOT being President of the United States. Stop reading more into his comment than is already there. Did it ever occur to you he could be interested in a lower office instead? Also, where do you get off with the bone-headed crack that just because Tim Tebow is religious he is not smart or intelligent. Are you saying that people with religious beliefs are stupid by default? His educational background (or lack therof according to Riggio) doesn't mean Tebow is some sort of idiot either. If Tim Tebow should stay away from politics, Riggio should stay away from writing articles.

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!! Waht a complete joke. How in God's name can any sane individual agree with this clown. Do we live in America or North Korea.

This is just another example of a rush to judgement, this time of one of the "good guys in life," by someone who DOES NOT enjoy looking at his own faith and does not like what he sees in the mirror, then tries to tear down someone of faith, who has a platform and a presence. Faith has a basis of trust for its foundation. The author from Yahoo might consider looking into the mirror and asking questions of "how can I be a better me?"
Then develop a plan to do just that, then follow through and take action on that plan. All of us can learn from our experiences in life, if we just take time to look for what can be learned, but that takes inner reflection and honesty to ones self. Feel free to take shots at "Good guys in life," when you have corrected all of your personal flaws, first.

Well said ;-) Tebow inspires me to be a better person!! Keep up the positive posts and we can make the world a better place. Take care and THANKS.

This is probably the single most ignorant article I have ever read in my life. Mr Riggio immediately assumed that Tim Tebow would run for president, dont think Mr Tebow ever said that. He said "public office". While I am not sure that Tim Tebow would make a good president, he is only 26 by the way, he has as much right to run for office as any other person as long as they meet the requirments outlined in the Consititution. The fact that his college degree doesnt meet Mr Riggio's requirement is a non issue. Our current president has a degree in Consitutional Law and I am not sure he has ever read the Consititution, based on his ideas.

Absolutly amazing! How can a clean cut intelligent All American possibly care to suppose he could attain the high level of responsibility that is called pollitics, he would have to be a devisive misguiding weasal like most of our current politicians.

Ummmm. I'm not a Tebow apologist (or even a christian for that matter) but this article is biased, nonsensical and pretty much just plain stupid. What does it take to be a "yahoo contributor"- no real job and too much time on your hands?
    • Smokey Bear  •  3 mths ago
Andrew Riggio should never write articles.
      • Blue Maurice 3 mths ago
Agreed. The "Ultra-religious" believe they serve a purpose higher than their job. This I assume is compared to all those "regular-religious" who are willing to compromise their morals for a buck? Why don't we demand our candidates are "smart intelligent people"...I assume that means as opposed to "Ultra-religious" or is that opposed to Tebow who you are inferring is not smart or intelligent?

Another anti Cristian, anti Tebow article by Yahoos leading atheist writer, Andrew Riggio. Doesn't repeated attacks on a religion or singling out one member for attack equal persecution.
      • Josh 3 mths ago
just another example of a hateful bigot declaring others intolerant or unintelligent becuase they believe something different
      • Vasyl 3 mths ago
Since my comment gets constantly blocked, I will try to post it as a reply.
Mr. Riggio, what have YOU accomplished in your life? Do you have any other skills besides writing negative things about this guy? Seems like you do not have much knowledge about economics, constitutional law, medicine, engineering and finance. Your lack of tolerance makes me suspect you was raised in a situation where you faced little traditional social interaction with large groups of peers. Otherwise you would have wider worldview and have something more thoughtful to write about.
Please excuse my grammar. English is my third language.

"In other words, he has little practical experience applicable to leading a nation. He's not an expert in the matters that make a modern economy or political body operate."

Wait is this an article about why Obama should not be in office?
    • Petals  •  Dallas, Texas  •  3 mths ago
Whoever wrote this article has no knowledge of God or how He is supposed to be front and center in our lives and that should consult with Him, via prayer, on any major decisions. And, all presidents have cabinet members and other "experts" to assist them in running the country and in foreign affairs. Most presidents don't have any actual experience dealing with these things until they get elected. And, there are special interests both outside and inside the government which exert far more influence on a president so, again, his lack of degrees in certain fields is a non-starter. It'd be a nice change of pace to actually have a person of character take office.

When I saw the title of this article i figured it was Riggio that wrote it. What...only atheists should be in politics???

So, only Ivy Leaguers should be President? How has that been working out the last 20 years?
