Tiny World 'Snow White' Has Water Ice and Maybe Atmosphere

A mysterious little world nicknamed "Snow White" is covered in ice and may sport the wispy remnants of an atmosphere, a new study of a dwarf planet that lies outside Neptune has found.

Even though Snow White — officially known as 2007 OR10, and orbiting the sun as part of the Kuiper belt — is actually red, half of the surface is covered by water ice that probably spewed from ancient cryovolcanoes, researchers said.

The dwarf planet's reddish hue likely comes from a thin layer of methane, the last gasps of an atmosphere that has been bleeding off into space for eons.

"You get to see this nice picture of what once was an active little world with water volcanoes and an atmosphere, and it's now just frozen, dead, with an atmosphere that's slowly slipping away," the study's lead author Mike Brown, of Caltech, said in a statement. [Looking Back on Killing Pluto: Q & A With Mike Brown]

    A reddish, icy dwarf

Snow White is about half the size of Pluto. Like Pluto, it's part of the Kuiper belt, which is the ring of icy bodies that orbit the sun beyond Neptune.

At the time of its discovery in 2007, Brown guessed that Snow White had broken off long ago from another dwarf planet, called Haumea. Haumea, a weird, football-shaped body, is sheathed in water ice, so Brown figured this dwarf planet was, too — hence the nickname Snow White.

However, follow-up observations soon showed that Snow White, like many other Kuiper Belt objects, is actually quite red. So Brown and his team weren't expecting to find a lot of water ice when they used the 6.5-meter Magellan Baade Telescope in Chile to take a closer look at Snow White last year.

But that's just what they saw. Spectral data showed that water ice abounded on Snow White's surface.

"That was a big shock," Brown said. "Water ice is not red."

Brown and his colleagues reported their results last month in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

    Just like Quaoar?

Scientists know of one other dwarf planet that's both red and covered with water ice: Quaoar, which Brown and his team discovered in 2002. [Meet the Solar System's Dwarf Planets]

Researchers think Quaoar, which is slightly smaller than Snow White, once had an atmosphere composed of volatile compounds such as methane, carbon monoxide and nitrogen. But its gravity wasn't strong enough to hold onto these chemicals, and the icy world began losing its atmosphere to space.

Over time, everything but some methane escaped. And radiation from space has transformed those methane molecules — which consist of one carbon atom bonded to four hydrogen atoms — into long hydrocarbon chains, researchers said.

Those chains look red to our instruments, and they sit atop Quaoar's water-ice surface.

Snow White's spectrum looks similar to Quaoar's, suggesting that similar processes occurred on both dwarf planets, researchers said.

"That combination — red and water — says to me 'methane,'" Brown said. "We're basically looking at the last gasp of Snow White. For four and a half billion years, Snow White has been sitting out there, slowly losing its atmosphere, and now there's just a little bit left."

While Snow White definitely has a lot of water ice on its surface, the evidence for methane is not conclusive, Brown added. Researchers hope to use even bigger telescopes to scrutinize the dwarf planet further.

Snow White is just a nickname for 2007 OR10.
Astronomers often give nicknames for objects before naming them.
Xena was a nickname for Eris.
Santa was a nickname for Haumea.
Easterbunny was a nickname for Makemake.

Don't make them out more than what they are.

how come snow white gets to be called a planet and pluto doesn't ?

can't anyone at Disney make up there minds??

Snow White and Pluto are both "dwarf planets."

It does sound like Disney is paying for all these names, though. :)

OK, if this dwarf planet has insufficient gravity to hold on to its atmosphere, how did it have enough gravity to attract the atmosphere in the first place? It seems like at some point in its formation it would have had to have been big enough to attract enough particles to form an initial atmosphere before it could start losing it...
      • RoB 7 mths ago
it wouldn't 'attract" an atmosphere. Atmospheres on bodies of that size would form through volcanism.
      • michael 7 mths ago
Pay no attention to RoB, he assumes that the formation mass had these gases in the formation rocks that boiled out which ignors the heat of formation which would have boiled off the gasses long before the place became large enough to have suffient gravity to hold an atomsphere. Which raises an interesting question. Why do they assume the earth was hot when it formed yet ignor that tiny detail on these planets. They seem to be speaking out of both sides of their mouths on planet formation. if the planet formed as a hot body than the gasses including the water came from somewhere else, if it was a cold body than than the water came from the melting of the core which again raises a question how did the core melt.

"A redish, icy dwarf"....That sounds a lot like my ex , except she was a little more white-ish.

Space the final frontier. We should investigate this planet. I've always believed that there's got to be another planet like ours out there somewhere. Investigating these would help us in finding an earth like planet that much faster.

Hi, Randy w, did you know we can see the Kuiper Belts of other stars? What we see are not the large spectacular objects like Snow White or Pluto, instead we see tiny dust grains. Xillions and xillions of them have a larger surface area than the big bruisers so if we get far enough away, we see the whole thing.

Some are flat like pancakes and some are fat like bagels. We get a lot better odds of finding our compadres by looking at the fat ones IMHO.

Oh, okay now we got planets named after princesses. Good job.
      • Mike 7 mths ago
Finally. Somebody proposed a great name for the largest dwarf planet, they wanted to call it "Xena" after the warrior princess. But the name was rejected. The IAU knew Xena was actually an actress named Lucy Lawless.
      • Raymond Scott 6 mths ago
Snow White is not the official name.
Xena was never a proposed name for Eris.
        Both nicknames.
Easterbunny had been used for Makemake.
Santa had been used for Haumea.

There was an article in Nature recently about the hydrogen/deuterium ratio in the Earth's ocean water. It was thought it would match the h/d ratio in Jupiter class comets, but it didn't. It didn't match the ratio in long period (Oort cloud) comets, either. Instead, it matched the Kuiper belt. This result shows we need to study the Kuiper belt. It's where we come from

Me personally, I think we need to search not just the Kuiper belt, but some of the moons orbiting other planets to see if they have the resources we need and exploit them as fast as we can... OH DID I SAY THAT OUT LOUD?

No seriously, we do need to look close at these dwarf planets, they maybe able to explain for than just the origins of us, but they might provide us something more valuable like a place to figure out how to fix our planet and possible teraform. Yeah it is sci fi but we do it every day when we plant a garden where one was not before.

      NotaHarperlovingDimwit
This Harper guy, isn't he that murderous, genocidal manic leader who rules Canada with an
iron fist? The one who also starves his people to death and raids their homes and kills families? I always get him confused with the former leader of Uganda. I was going to immigrate to your country, but have since decided against it, because of what you say about him. I'd rather stay here where death is quicker, because I wouldn't want to came there and risk starving to death. My neighbors were hacked to death by some soldiers last week and there house was burned, to the ground but they did die fairly quickly. Thanks for the tip!
