‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ Super Bowl Trailer

The first proper trailer dropped back in December, but what could be more American, besides the Fourth of July of course, than football? Perfect, then, that Fox has unveiled a brand new trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence during Super Bowl 50, and you can watch it here.

The last trailer emphasized continuity with the original film. This one emphasizes the new – new stars, new aliens, new ways to blow up and save the earth. And of course, new lines by Jeff Goldblum. Set (and coming out) 20 years after the original, mankind has recovered and reverse-engineered alien technology to beef up the planet’s defenses just in time for reinforcements called in by the rapacious Alien swarm defeated in the first film. Aware of the looming threat posed by the alien cavalry, (some of) the original cast plus a few newcomers must fight them off.

Roland Emmerich once again directs, from a script he cowrote with his old partner Dean Devlin along with Nic Wright & James A. Woods, and James Vanderbilt. Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner reprise their roles from the original film. They’re joined this time out by Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Joey King, Angelababy, and William Fichtner. Noticeably absent: Will Smith, who opted not to return this time out.
