Tom Brokaw Says His Cancer Is in Remission
Veteran broadcaster Tom Brokaw revealed Sunday that his cancer is in remission.
“A year ago my future was more uncertain than I cared to acknowledge but now I face the New Year with very encouraging news,” Brokaw, who anchored the “NBC Nightly News” from 1982 to 2004, wrote in a note to NBC News staff.
Brokaw, 74, revealed in February that he had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer that attacks bone marrow.

Brokaw, who remains an NBC News special correspondent, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in November. Last week, he took part in the sing-along finale of “The Colbert Report.”
In the note to staff, Brokaw wrote about serving as a presidential delegate earlier this month to a commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. Brokaw is credited with coining the term “The Greatest Generation.”

“I flew home reflecting again on how lucky we are that generation gave us the lives we have today,” he wrote, “how my last year was a challenge but I was meeting it in world class hospitals with brilliant physicians, not in a foxhole in the Ardennes.”
He signed the note, “Happy New Year all. T Bone.”
