People magazine is reporting that after nearly six years of weird wedded bliss, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are divorcing. No reason has been given, but we'd imagine it has nothing to do with aliens, Scientology, or, y'know, those rumors about Mr. Cruise.

The TomKat (as was their portmanteau) affair was big news in the summer of 2005, when the couple started appearing together around the time of the premiere of Holmes' Batman Begins. The frenzy of course climaxed when Cruise went on The Oprah Winfrey Show and got so worked up about his new relationship that he jumped up and down on Oprah's couch. What was meant to look like a boisterous display of burgeoning love came across forced at best and a bit crazy at worst. Then it was revealed that Holmes was pregnant, sending everyone into another nutty gossip riot until she gave birth to a daughter, Suri, in April of 2006. (Nearly seven months before the couple was wed.) There were reports about silent birth and other strange Scientology practices, but mostly Suri seems like a normal, if very wealthy and pampered, little girl.

And now the couple splits, ending Holmes' first marriage and Cruise's third. And just as Cruise's career is heating up again! What strange, almost convenient timing. Not that a divorce is good P.R. exactly, but it does mean he's single now, ladies of Earth. (And possibly other places.) It will be interesting to see if Holmes untangles herself from Cruise's beloved Church of Scientology, as her somewhat mandatory involvement in the religion was said to have caused some rifts with her family.

There's no word yet on custody, prenups, or any of that, but you can bet that Cruise has situated himself carefully. He didn't "Cruise" his young wife, meaning divorce her just shy of the 10 year minimum for lifetime spousal support, but there's likely other architecture to the marriage that will prevent some enormous payout. And of course that's not what this is about anyway. This isn't a business arrangement after all! It's a marriage. One that fascinated the world for a bit but then, eventually, started to seem almost normal. And now, like so many normal marriages, it has come to an end.
