Is Scientology to blame for Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' recent split?
According to TMZ, the 33-year old actress filed for divorce from the "Rock of Ages" star due to fears that Cruise was planning to send their 6-year-old daughter, Suri, away to live at the hardcore Scientology organization known as Sea Org.
Now there are reports that members of the Church of Scientology are shadowing Holmes and Suri (the Church of Scientology denies this) and that Catholic-raised Holmes plans to file for sole custody of her daughter.
But TomKat isn't the first celeb couple to split over religious differences. Check out these other celebs who were divided over religion.
Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony
Last year, entertainment news site Showbizspy.com reported that Jennifer Lopez wanted to send her three-year-old twins Max and Emme to a "specialist Scientology school," but then-hubby Marc Anthony wasn't on board with the plan.
"She's always been more into the church than him. He wasn't a huge fan and it caused problems," a source said.
In 2008 J-Lo told the Daily Beast that her father has been a Scientologist for more than 20 years, and she even revealed that she "wouldn't mind" sending her kids to a Scientology school.
"I know that the technologies that they have are very helpful," she said.
Katy Perry and Russell Brand
While religion wasn't the core reason for pop star Katy Perry's split from comedian Russell Brand, it couldn't have helped matters. Last year, Perry told Vanity Fair, "I come from a very non-accepting family, but I'm very accepting….Russell is into Hinduism, and I'm not [really] involved in it."
According to The Sun, the "Part of Me" singer was raised a devout Christian (she was banned from watching TV and only listened to gospel music) and her ex-hubby made a habit of mocking her evangelical-minister parents.
But perhaps the split was a blessing in disguise. When news of her daughter's divorce made headlines, Perry's mom, Mary, told the packed congregation at the Church on the Rise in Westlake, Ohio: "I'm sure Katy is trending on the internet just to get you to church tonight."
Madonna and Guy Ritchie/ Madonna and Brahim Zaibat
Madonna and second hubby Guy Ritchie were regulars at the Kabbalah Centres in New York and Los Angeles (he was reportedly even circumcised for the religion), but shortly before their split in 2008, Ritchie told "Extra": "I don't really understand Kabbalah as a religion."
And the Daily Mail reported that 53-year old Madonna's split last year from her dancer boy toy, Brahim Zaibat, was over her Kabbalah beliefs.
The 24-year old hip hop dancer is a strict Muslim, and a source close to Zaibat told the Mail: "Brahim's family had told him they did not want him going to Kabbalah meetings and wanted him to stick to his Muslim beliefs, which caused some rows. Things started to turn sour and they were hardly seeing each other."
The lovebirds have seemingly put their religious differences on the back burner, however. Things appear to be hot and heavy again, which proves that sometimes you just gotta have faith!
