Tony Bennett honored on Valentine's Day in SF

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — More than 1,000 people crammed into San Francisco's City Hall on Valentine's Day to honor singer Tony Bennett and the 50th Anniversary of his famous song, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco."

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that a symphony, children's chorus and the Gay Men's Chorus all sang the famous song to Bennett during a ceremony he attended on Tuesday.

The tune had its first public performance in December 1961 in the Venetian Room of the Fairmont Hotel, where Bennett was scheduled to sing later Tuesday night.

Bennett's version of the song was being played throughout the city on radio and in public performances at Union Square in honor of the holiday.

The song has become a part of San Francisco culture, and is played after every home victory for the Giants.

I sent my sinuses to Arizona,
I sent my liver to Peru.
I sent my lungs and my kidney for the summer to Sydney,
But I'm sending my heart to you.

I was there. It was the Boys and Girl's Club, San Francisco School of the Arts Choir, not "some kids" Do you "journalists" ever do research. Ask a question? Give us news? This shoddy work should be embarrassing.

The real credit should go to Doug Cross and George Corey who wrote the song. They were made goodwill embassadors at the time for San Francisco.

By any measure his music is timeless and as a performer---he's stellar. When a music icon can stay in the limelight for what 40-50 years? Never go away---or out of style and not succumb to drugs and be dead already---you have to admire his music---and his character. I'm not of of his era---but still---Hollywood has so few success stories of this magnitude--for this length of time still being popular? You have to admire that.

I saw Tony Bennett during a trip to Conn when I worked for Scientific-Atlanta. I believe it was in the 80's. He was singing at a nightclub I visited with an associate. He is the greatest.

The man has so much personality, so much charisma and so much musicality, that is does not really matter, that his voice is basicly totally gone!

Unfortunately noone can fix an old, completely wornout, abused voice, - or the total lack of musicality among people, who can´t hear the difference between a gunshot and a woman in labor!

I have a picture of my Mom with Tony Bennett (and about 20 other folk) from back in the 80's...she adored him. He's still held on to his voice and his wits. We should all hope to be so active in our 80's. Politics be damned, at his age you get a pass....and if they gays sang to him he's got their hearts too.

I always wondered whether Tony Bennett was sick of that song, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" since his whole career revolves around it.

As a sometime performer, who does songs people ask for that I've long since grown tired of, I'd guess that he has a love/hate relatonship with I Left My Heart in San Francisco. He's sung it a zillion times, and probably cringes when it's time to do it once more. On the other hand, the song has been "beddy, beddy good to him", both financially and in terms of the endearing and enduring love of an entire city.

50th anniversary of "The Organ Donor's Song." The flipside was the less famous " I Left My Spleen In Abilene"...

Who hit the high notes better, the children or the Gay Men's Chorus?

Tony Bennett is no more than a geriatric patient with a silver toupee. He needs to take his meds on time, and get his bingo cards early for this evenings recreation!
