Danger! Books ahead! Each year during Banned Books Week, the American Library Association shares its list of the top 10 most frequently challenged books of 2010. Banned Books Week 2011 occurs Sept. 24 to Oct. 1. Few classics make the list, but there are penguins, vampires, a part-time Indian and angst-ridden, sexually-curious teens.

No. 1 "And Tango Makes Three" by Peter Parnell and Justin Richardson

Unlike the other books on the list, "And Tango Makes Three" is a picture book, inspired by the true story (based on an incident at Central Park Zoo in Manhattan) of two male penguins, Roy and Silo, successfully incubating an egg. According to the ALA, it has been challenged due to "homosexuality, religious viewpoint" and is considered "unsuited to age group" (preschool to grade 3) "And Tango Makes Three" has remained the number one challenged book since 2006, with the exception of 2009 when Lauren Myracle's "ttyl; ttfn; l8r, g8r" (series) was the most challenged book.

No. 2 "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" by Sherman Alexie

Published in 2007, the book remained relatively under the censorship radar until 2010, debuting at the number two spot of most challenged books. The book is challenged for " offensive language, racism, sex education, sexually explicit, violence , and being unsuited to age group (grades seven through 10).

No. 3 "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley

This was the only classic to make the 2010 list. Reasons the book was challenged include: "insensitivity, offensive language, racism and being sexually explicit." Huxley was ranked 36th on the most challenged author list from 2000 to 2009, and No. 54 from 1990 to 1999, according to the ALA.

No. 4 "Crank" by Ellen Hopkins

Hopkins' book has been compared to another frequently challenged book, "Go Ask Alice." Published in 2004, 2010 is the first year "Crank" makes the top 10 list, thanks to " drugs, offensive language, and being sexually explicit."

No. 5 The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins

When the highly anticipated movie premieres in 2012, this dystopian novel may jump a few notches on the challenged list. The book is challenged for violence, sexual explicitness and is considered unsuited to its intended age group (grades seven and up).

No. 6 "Lush" by Natasha Friend

The main character lives in a dysfunctional family with and alcoholic father. Although it was published in 2006, 2010 is the first year the book makes it to the most challenged list. Reasons include:"drugs, offensive language, sexually explicit, and unsuited to age group (grades 7 and up).

No. 7 "What My Mother Doesn't Know" by Sonya Sones

Sones' book has bounced off and on the most challenged list in the last decade, mainly for "sexism, being sexually explicit, unsuited to age group," according to ALA.

No. 8 Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich

Ehrenreich's book is the only non-fiction book on the list. Reasons for challenges include drugs, offensive language and religious viewpoint. It's also challenged due to its political viewpoint and for being "inaccurate," according to the ALA.

No. 9 "Revolutionary Voices" edited by Amy Sonnie

Rarely does a collection of stories make the top 10 list, but here it is. The book has been challenged for "homosexuality and being sexually explicit."

No. 10 "Twilight" by Stephenie Meyer

Meyer's vampire phenomenon has dropped down in its ranking for 2010, last year there were even "more dangerous" books on the shelves. In 2009 "Twilight" the series ranked at number five. The series is challenged most frequently due to violence and its religious viewpoint.

The "Top 10 Challenged Books of 2010" is faked by the American Library Association to promote its agenda, according to statements made by "banned" author #9 on the list at a New Jersey Library Association meeting. Essentially, the ALA knew other books where challenged more that hers but put hers on the list because the LGBT issue was involved. Speaking of which, the top book on the list was challenged only 4 times all year. Four. It is my opinion the ALA is cynically using the LGBT community to promote its own interests.

No book has been banned in the USA for about half a century. Fanny Hill got that honor a long time ago . Challenged books in schools that are removed is different from banning. Setting aside that Banned Books Week is propaganda, the creator of BBW said:

"On rare occasion, we have situations where a piece of material is not what it appears to be on the surface and the material is totally inappropriate for a school library. In that case, yes, it is appropriate to remove materials. If it doesn't fit your material selection policy, get it out of there."

See: " Banned Books Week Propaganda Exposed by Progressive Librarian Rory Litwin; ALA Censors Out Criticism of Its Own Actions in a Manner Dishonest to the Core ."

See also: " Celebrate 'Librarians Trying to Make Themselves Feel Important' Week! ," by Annoyed Librarian , Library Journal , 26 September 2011.

Be sure to see a "banned" author admitting the ALA fakes its top 10 challenged book list for political reasons. See: " Banned Books Week is Gay Promotion? Author Admits ALA Faked 2010 Top 10 Challenged Book List ."

Oh yes, the ALA's "censorship map" is plagiarized. By the ALA. And the ALA knows it and still uses it and only recently revealed the true authors. See " How ALA Plagiarism Becomes Truth Through the Media Lens; SafeLibraries in USA Today ."

The neo-Nazis want to ban Huxley's Brave New World? Good thing they're too ignorant to be aware of his other works, such as Doors of Perception, or Island. Those would really drive the Nazis up the wall!

I remember seeing Farenheit 451 on the top 100 challenged books for banning list. I believe it was for the American Library Assn. I find it very ironic, and disturbing, that a book that has to deal with the burning of books, suppression of free speech, thoughts and actions, and state control over the masses would even be considered by anyone to be banned in the United States!

I don't need someone to tell me what I can read, watch, to what music I can listen. I don't need some religious nut telling how bad a book is, I can decide that for myself. As for kids, yes, parents should have some control but all Jr. has to do is go to his/her friends' house to have access. Besides, kids hear swearing and see racism, hate, violence, sexism and all kinds of negative things daily.
      • Daily Watcher 8 mths ago
YES thank you we need to stand up and stop this! People do not realize this is not just for kids they are trying to tell us all what we should and should not do its a violation of our civil rights

I'm surprised that Machivelli's "the Prince", and Orwell's "1984" aren't near the top, they're the guidebooks for modern politics, and we certainly shouldn't be aware of the methods described in those works for controlling public opinion and behavior.
    • DaveyJones  •  8 mths ago
Orwell's "Animal Farm" and "1984" MUST READS!
      • Noibn48 8 mths ago
His stuff from the 30s and his Spanish Civil Memoir are better.

There should be absolutely nothing written that should be banned. Shades of Hitler!!! How can one's mind grow if not allowed access to other thoughts?
      • Gary A 7 mths ago
        Nothing IS banned. It's #$%$

'Brave New World' is a classic, and it should never be on anyone's banned list, rather it should be on everyone's required reading list. Thirty-four years before 'Brave New World', however, there was an even more predictive, germane novel: 'When the Sleeper Wakes' by H.G. Wells (1898 edition). Both fit well within the 21st Century, if one would closely look around.
    • ROBB  •  8 mths ago
Funny l thought Huck Finn by Mark Twain would have made this list. But it has probably already been banned by the politically correct.

A suitcase full of Ben Franklins can't get the publicity a good book-banning can.
Sales of all of these titles are bound to go up for one of two reasons, go figure.

'Banned in Boston' used to be the key to financial rewards. If one wanted a best-seller, a 'Banned in Boston' banner on the cover assured it.
      • KatH 8 mths ago
"Forbidden Fruit"....song title ;-)....and it's true....should help sales. Maybe schools should start banning Civics, Science, & Math books.

@Democrats Are Evil! wrote, "Bet none of these books will stand the test of time..." How much do you want to bet?$1,000? OK. It's a bet (shaking hands). I just made $1,000! Brave New World has been around for 80 years, and it's still being read. Witness the fact that people are still trying to ban it. Hmm ... what can I do with my $1,000 ... ???

      Makes a good reading list.

You don't have to worry about the classic literature any more, American children no longer have the language skills to understand them.
    • give me a break  •  8 mths ago
      just crazy.
    • RLJ  •  8 mths ago
Brave New World was assigned when I was in HS. So was a book entitled Johnny Got His Gun, by Dalton Trumbo. Outstanding book, and I'm now told by an English teacher that it would never be allowed now. I read it in a Political Science class. Ah, the dumbing down of America. Rethugs will have us on par with Botswana before we know it!
    • porpoiseboy  •  7 mths ago
it is funny how many on here, who spout what careful readers and arbiters of what their children read, have NO IDEA and cannot acknowledge what an ulltra liberal organization that the ALA is. THAT is where all the controversy comes from. from the ala putting certain age appropriate stamps on books that ARE NOT appropriate for that age. this IS NOT about book banning.
