So instead of being a fun way to keep in touch with family and friends its just one more thing, like a resume, that I need to carefully manipulate and update to project the "right" impression? Sounds like a death toll for social networking to me.

Many people will come to regret and loath the day they joined Facebook. It has, for many people, become the blemish and wart that just won't go away... It ties people to a past that many, who want to advance forward in their lives, do not want to remember.

Step one to protect your Facebook while employed: do not ever add fellow employees or human resources personnel as "friends". Make it your no. 1 rule while you're a new employee with a company: do not add other employees and deny "friend requests" from them. Hold it out for a year while you see how trustworthy or deceptive your fellow employees can be during your employment. If the HR insist on you are to add theirs to your "friends" list, tell them no and that you do not ever discuss work-related issues on your FB. Your personal life is completely separate from your career/job. All companies have NO right to dictate how you do with your own FB account and your personal life.

I can't believe people cannot see how dangerous fb is. You now have to watch every word you say. If people are smart they will bail by the millions. It is going to get worse. And no I do not use fb.

Exactly why I quit FB, too much to worry about and no control over things relating to me.

Another mistake: Failing to utilize your privacy settings to prevent co-workers & bosses from even finding or seeing your profile. Don't make it publicly available or searchable, don't list your employment information, don't include your last name, & block people preemptively.

Kind of funny not long ago before the internet we were worried about people and the government invading our privacy but now people willingly divulge their life & secrets online for all to see.

We've basically lost our freedom of expression in online communities like Face Book because Big Brother (government, advertisers, prospective and current employers) is watching all our movements and dissecting our every word. Either use a pseudonym or close your account. Your personal life should be yours, with your choice of who you share it with - not what an online community like Face Book forces you to do.

I remember like 5 years ago, every article was about "ways your facebook profile can limit your job opportunities." I cant believe that all these years later, it's still the same article written, over and over again!

I luv articles like this one that suggest one NEEDS to use Facebook. Good grief.

The first and only mistake is using Facebook and other so called social networking sites. Any thing you say or do can and will be used against you for your job search

The biggest mistake a person could make is using facebook in the first place. They have this cool thing called outside. You should try it!

There are privacy settings for a reason. USE THEM! You can even organize your friends into lists and control which friends can see what.
