This week, Facebook launched its first-ever commercial, which compared the social network to many things, among them chairs, doorbells and the universe. The common thread between these things, from what we gathered, is that they connect us. This week at Mashable reminded us of the connections we share and how quickly the ways we connect have changed thanks to the power of social media.

It's not every day you reach one billion active users, so perhaps we were too harsh on Facebook's new ad. It was fun to create our own spoof of the "chair" commercial, and also interesting to consider not just the number of users but the number of friendships populating Facebook: over 140 billion.

The power of social media is never more apparent than when Internet clips go viral, and that's what happened earlier this week when a television anchor in Wisconsin called out a "cyber-bully" for criticizing her appearance. Her response quickly resonated online, and our community had both support and criticisms to offer.

It wasn't all about connections this week: The first presidential debate was on Wednesday, creating plenty of divisions in the digital space. The two candidates faced off on domestic policy, and the 90-minute debate inspired the most tweets of any event in political history. From crowdfunded candidates to the inevitability of online voting, the political process across the world is changing, thanks to digital media. We took a step back from the debates to examine the larger trends driving politics in the digital sphere with a special report, Politics Transformed. See some of the discussion in the gallery above.
